Ipad 2 @ $499 vs. Nook color at $199 HELP!

The Nook can be purchased new for $199 with a coupon code on ebay.  I have an HTC Evo phone with apps already.  I don't have a reader.

I read a LOT of blogs, which I know is easy as pie on an ipad, but does it work well on a Nook color?

Re: Ipad 2 @ $499 vs. Nook color at $199 HELP!

  • Reading blogs on the NC is ok. It doesn't have Flash so it depends on the blogs.

Of course this is all supposed to change with the NC update sometime in the near future.

I choose the NC over the ipad but it sucks right now b/c its a little limited. I keep waiting for the update although I'm getting restless.

Of course you could always root it and then have no issues.

  • I would say go for the iPad.  I have the regular Nook which I am completely obsessed with.  I wouldn't change to the color because it isn't anti-glare so I couldn't use it on beach trips.

However, the biggest bonus I've found with my Nook is I can download books for free from my state library (a lot of states have eLibraries where you can reserve and download books for free.  A definite bonus over the Kindle, which doesn't allow this.)

I don't know how fast the NC is, but I know the regular Nook is slow as molasses when it comes to the internet.  So if you aren't going to be using it outside regularly I'd say just spend the extra $ for the iPad and have a million more options.

  • Having played around with both the NC and iPad, I would undoubtedly choose an iPad. It's just a better all around tablet, especially for internet browsing/blog reading. In a few minutes of trying to play around with the NC I got pretty frustrating with some of the browsing.  Combine that with the camera on the ipad2 puts it solidly in the win column for me. Both are OK for reading books, you can put the Kindle App on the ipad, which will allow you to borrow books from friends. But they are backlit, which can cause eye strain and glare.

  • I have a NOOK (the original) for reading and an iPad for playing, so what I would do is get a cheapie NOOK or Kindle for reading only and an iPad 2 for fun.  I know that means you are spending more money, but...

However, I would get the iPad with the higher amount of memory.  I am assuming the $499 is just the 16GB.  I would upgrade to the 32GB, which would be $599, it seems.

Also, if you go with the iPad 2, Overdrive has an app that allows you to read library ebooks on the iPad.  And it's a decent interface...I read some library books on my NOOK and some on my iPad, depending on where I am.  I do agree that the e-ink of a Kindle or NOOK is MUCH nicer for reading outside, due to the glare factor.
