A tiny light in the tunnel---WITH UPDATE

So with all the BS and sadness and crap to do with my dad dying...there is one little thing good happening right now.

My dad said before he died that he believed that when if he passed away, the students loans for our (me and my sister's) college educations that were in his name would be forgiven. We just let him believe that since it gave him peace to think that his death would actually help us financially, but we didnt think it was true unless both he and the student it was borrowed for both died.

Found out yesterday that at least 1 of my 3 loans under his name is already been forgiven due to this death. My mom is calling the other company today to make sure those ones are too, since it depends on the company it was borrowed from and the type of loan (these were Parent PLUS loans). I've been paying on them since i left school and we thought about transferring them to my name to make it easier a few years ago, but he wanted to keep them under his name for the hope of this to happen.

So if it comes to be, i'll be saving almost $600 a month if they are all forgiven!!! I should have really believed him. Thanks, Dad...you're the best :)

  • That is awesome! See, your dad knew what he was talking about. While I'm sure you would pay twice what you owed if it meant you could have your dad back, at least it can give you some peace of mind. Though, this makes me wonder about my one sister. Her fiance's father was sick with cancer but he told them not to go ahead and get married when they were talking about pushing up their date so he could be there. His reasoning was because if they got married, there would be no student loan forgiveness in the event that he passes away.  Unfortunately, he did pass away a year or so ago.  I really hope that he didn't just get confused by it!

  • That is good news Kim! I hope it works out that the others are forgiven as well - what a huge benefit that would be. Fingers crossed that your mom gets good news about those!!

YES. i would pay anything, but sadly that can't be done!

Not sure about your sisters fiance's situation...it could be a different type of loan or one where his name was on the loan as well as a cosigner or something. it probably depends on the state too.
