Would this worry you?

5 years ago my Dad retired.  I bought him some books to read, to help with all his free time.  One of the books was The Glass Castle.  I happened to be visiting him the week he read that book.  We talked a lot about the book, how disturbing it was and how it ended.

Well yesterday I was talking to my dad and he asked if I have read The Glass Castle.  I responded that I had, the he says he is currently reading it and is about 1/2 through.  Again we talked about some parts of the plot and how disturbing it is.  He asked if it ever picks up and gets happy.

He has no memory that he has already read this book.  Would this alarm you, or am I just being a worry wort daughter?   He tends to retell a lot of stories, but I never thought too much of it.  He turned 60 this year.

Re: Would this worry you?

  • I would be a little alarmed.  I wouldn't get too worried at this point, because maybe it's just a weird fluke.  But maybe ask you mom and brother if they've noticed anything like this?
  • Yes, I would be worried.  I would talk to your mom, and see if she has noticed him being overly forgetful lately.   Have you told him that he already read the book and that you talked about it?  Not only does he not remember reading the book, he doesn't remember talking to you about it.  I think it's worth bringing up to him if you haven't already.  Maybe reminding him that he already read it and talked about it will spark the memories.  If he doesn't at all remember the book or your conversations, it might be time to call a Dr.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like a big deal.

  • I would be a little worried. As mentioned above, I would talk to your mother and express your concerns and see if this has become a problem, etc. Good luck.

  • How long of a gap is it between when he first read it and now? Was it 5 years? If so, I don't think I would be as worried as if you just had a conversation about the book a few months ago.

There have been times that I forgot that I have read a book or seen a movie, but within a few minutes I get that sense..this is familiar i think I already seen it or read it. That is the only part I do find strange.

  • I would be worried if he doesn't remember discussing it with you.  Did you tell him that he already read it and you two discussed it?
  • Yeah, I think I'd be concerned.  Like others mentioned, ask your mom about it.  Even if he read the book quite a while ago, there should be some distant remembrance of it, like it seems familiar, but I can't remember all the details or the outcome, kind of thing.  See what your mom says and take it from there.  It could just be a total random fluke.

  • Also, is your dad on any new medication?  Maybe something like that is causing some forgetfulness?

  • Its weird, I didn't want to mention to him he already read the book.  It was like I wanted to protect him, or not embarrass him. While talking to him, I knew I should say something, but I just couldn't get myslef to do it.

I talked to my mom.  She says he is his same old self, but she also isn't the most attentive person.  I also emailed my little brother.  He just spent 2 weeks with my dad, I ask him if he noticed anything.

It has been 5 years since he 1st read the book.  So I could understand maybe forgetting you red it, but I would think by halfway through the book the 2nd time you might realize it.

    I feel the same way.

And I think it's sweet of you to want to protect him or not embarrass him.  Maybe I am too harsh with my dad because I so would have called him out on it - in a joking way.  "Dad you are SO old!  You don't remember reading that before!?  Old fart!  *lols* "  But that just means I try to deal with potentially serious issues with humor. Confused

Either way, I hope everything is ok with him and that it is indeed a fluke.

Do any memory issues run in your family?  Unfortunately for me we have those in mine.  I already notice with my own memory.  Boo.

  • I would be a teeny worried, but my MIL forgets stuff like that all the time. I would become concerned if he's having trouble remembering things often, though.

  • Does he read a lot?  I have quite a few authors that when I look at their books & even start reading them, I can't remember if I read it or not.  I might have tiny "this sounds sort of familiar" moments, but still don't know what happens in the book, nor truly remember reading it.

It would twist my heart a little if such a thing happened with my dad, but I also know that I've had similar experiences with books.

  • I wouldn't worry about the fact that he doesn't remember talking to you about the book, esp since it was so long ago. I have a friend that I have heard her college stories over and over and over again.  Also, there are times that I'm telling Brian something and he looks at me like I'm nut and tells me that I told him that story a few days ago. Part of my problem is that I can't remember if I talked to him about it or to my CW when were were carpooling.

Also, with four kids in my family, my parents can never remember who they told what.

  • I agree with all of the responses.  BUT, it is a very delicate subject.  My mother and I had a fallen out because I approached her with my concern about her memory loss.  Her Grandfather has Alzheimers.  I told her i was concerned.  She was so upset with me accusing her of having Alzheimers...She quit talking to me for a few months. My brother and my Dad agreed with me.  but when it came down to it..they let me take the blunt of everything...I was so upset with them for not standing by my side on this serious matter.

It is a good thing that you have taken notice of this.  It may be nothing. it Could be a change in Meds. I would talk with other family members and see what they have to say.  I hope it really is nothing. I often wonder when my Dad starts to repeat himself if he is just bored and is just enjoying talking to someone so he just repeats himself just because there is someone to talk to.

It is ok that you are a worry wort daughter....It just means you care and Love your Dad. <3

This exactly. Five years is a long time to remember specifics about a book. I read it two or three years ago and I couldn't tell you exact details. Plus, I read A LOT so books kind of run together. Ask your family and then go from there.
