Okay, so...two of my closest girlfriends are both getting married this summer: one in June, one in August. I'm not in either wedding (or I would be in the poorhouse...which is where I may end up anyway...), but I will be attending all the major wedding events.
That means:
A bridal shower in April, a bachelorette party in May, a wedding in June and a bridal shower in June, a bachelorette party in July, a wedding August
I am not Rockefellar. I love both of these girls so much, and I want to give them awesome gifts, but I also know I have to stay within a pretty tight budget.
How do people feel about homemade gifts or off registry gifts for showers or weddings, if the gifts are in combination with a registry gift? Like, if I bought a registry gift for one, could I do homemade for the second? Or if I did two small registry gifts and two small homemade gifts?
For example, I know one girl registered for two cake pans. What if I did those paired with a hand-sewn apron? Or a teapot with quilted trivets?
Ideas?
Re: Homemade gifts for showers/weddings?
I LOVE personalized from the heart homemade gifts. I think your ideas are great - get something small from the registry and coordinate it with a heartfelt gift.
One of my favorite gifts from my shower was a 9 piece frame. My bff took B&W pics of architectural things in the shape of Amy & Wes. You can get them custom ordered for over $100, but her DIY meant so much more.
I'll take a pic and post it later.

I really enjoy receiving personalized gifts. I would love to get something like the ideas you mentioned. I especially like your cake pan/apron idea.
I loved the homemade gifts. One of my aunts made a quilt and another relative framed our invite for us. Both are used/displayed much more than my fondue pot.
I love the apron idea you mentioned!
I think your pairing idea sounds great! Like the cake pans with apron. Very ingenious!
Also, doing something like Mames suggested is a great idea. Friends of ours got something similar at a local fair for their parents with their last name. It was awesome. I'd like to do something similar for us someday! Theirs was like this, but all in one frame (a multi picture frame):
