SuperGreen

I started my seeds last Saturday and they're popping out nicely.

I saw your tutorial last night and you mentioned you have the seeds under shop lights. DH built me a "growing station" in the basement and I have the seedlings on a heating mat, covered with a lid (greenhouse effect) and the light is about 10 inches above.

1) Should I lower the light and then pull it up as they grow?

2) For how many hours a day do you keep the lights on?

I've been running the lights 24/7, but I'm not sure if that's right. They do seem to enjoy it though. Seedlings look way better than they did last year. They look much more....sturdier.lol

Re: SuperGreen

  • Once they sprout you should mimic daily sun cycles.  Also be sure to check the water as the additional heat will dry out the soil faster.  When you are getting ready to move them outside, be sure to transition them so they are acclimated to the outside temperature (turn off the heat, move them outside during the day and back in at night, etc.).

  • Ditto PP, you want to mimic a long day cycle, so keep the light on for 12 hours.  I turn it on when I first wake up in the morning, and turn it off right before I go to bed.  As far as the height of the light, you want it pretty darn close.  You don't want them to have to reach for the light, otherwise they get long and leggy and flop over.  As a general rule, I move the light to the point where I'm just a bit uncomfortable at how close it is.  I think "eeeep I think that's too close!" and that's where I leave it.  My seeds haven't sprouted yet so I don't have a measurement for you, but I would guess 4-5 inches maybe?  10 inches is too far.  You want the plants to grow thick stems, so they'll be able to withstand the wind once you plant them outside.  If they get really tall with thin stems, they'll bend too much in the wind.

Ditto PP on hardening them off.  While having the light so close will dry out the soil, overwatering is just as bad as underwatering.  You do want the soil to dry out between waterings.  After germination, I water every 3 day, with diluted fertlizer at every other watering.
