While watching an episode of How I Met Your Mother, my husband and I saw Marshall and Lily make up "Death Folders." We both thought this was a good idea to have all our information in one spot in case one of us dies unexpectedly. However... I am not sure about what all should be in it. I get that I have to include a will, living will, power of attorney, bank account numbers and passwords... am I missing anything?
Re: Taking a page from HIMYM
Health Care Directive, Lawyer's office, Life Insurance policy info, 401(k)/pension/retirement benefits information, keys to safe deposit boxes and the name of the banks come to mind.
My parents have a will and I have access to their copy that they have but I have to contact their lawyer's office when they're both gone to ensure that the copy I have access to is indeed the final version.
Health Care Directives are great tools for making end of life decisions easier on surviving spouses or heirs (or whoever you designate as the decision maker). You do not have to have it prepared by an attorney but it does have to be notarized or witnessed by 2 people not named in the document. I parepared one in my early 20s and revised it after I married my DH. You just have to make sure to send an updated copy to your physician's office and destroy the older versions for simplicity sake. I have backup copies at my parent's house and also gave a copy to each of my sisters. 5 people have copies of it so there will be no confusion of the chain of command or inability to find a copy!
