When do they drop the 2nd nap????

This is the second time this week, Nolan has not slept for his 2nd nap.  He's been in there talking, fussing, then quiet, then more fussing, and he's definitely moving around in there because I can hear the crib banging against the wall.  He takes a pretty hefty first nap, usally around 2 1/2-3 hours in length.  Yesterday he took a 4 hour nap so we didn't put him down for the 2nd one.  He can't be trying to kick the 2nd already????  Can he????

Re: When do they drop the 2nd nap????

  • I have no idea, but I am so jealous that he takes a 2.5hr first nap!

  • Helen stopped her second nap at 17 months but she was one of the later ones of her cohort to drop it, IIRC.  When Helen went to one nap, it was the morning nap that she eliminated and then I moved up her afternoon nap to after lunch.

  • I think Grace was around 12 months.  When she dropped the 2nd one I moved the nap to 12 or right after lunch.

  • See Nolan's nap schedule is different.  He gets up so late (like 8:30-9) that he doesn't take his first nap until 12.  His second nap is around 4:30, then he goes to bed at 8:30.  The pedi thought we at least were set up well for when he drops that 2nd nap because we just keep the first one the way it is, or even a little later, and then just bump up the bedtime.  I just didn't think he'd start boycotting the 2nd one so soon.  Maybe it's just a phase....
  • Wow! Caroline takes 3 naps but they only last an hour now. She can't stay up For longer then 2 hrs unless we're out in about. Caroline did strike her third nap a few weeks ago and then started back with it because I still put her upstairs.
  • Wow he sounds like an awesome napper!!  When Jake was 2 naps/day he was doing 30-45 mins each nap - it sucked.  Anyway, he dropped it between 13-14 months...they say average is around a year.

  • I'm not sure when they drop it but Taylor does one huge long nap.  When we are home on the weekends, we get up around 830 (but I think she wakes up around 730 and is just really quiet) and is back to sleep between 1030 and 1130 (depending on what she is doing, so about 3 hours between getting up and first nap.  It's usually 3-5 hours and will go down for an hour cat nap if her nap is on the shorter end.

Daycare she takes two naps.  Not sure about the first nap but the second one is usually about 330ish and DCP has to wake her up so we can go home.  Bedtime most nights is 730ish.

She does have her days where she is home with us and she goes down earlier and only sleeps 2 hours then has another nap in the afternoon.

ok, so I guess my point is, naps can be all over the place, so yah...he could be dropping the first one :)

  • DH asked me this the other day so I looked in Weissbluth - here's what he says: "At 12 months of age, 82% of children have 2 naps. But by 15 months, 43% take two naps." So, it sounds like a 12-18 months is the typical range for them to start dropping the second nap.

  • Riley has gone back and forth.  Twice now we've gone a month or two with only one nap (exactly 3 hours long) then the 2nd one reappears.  Right now it seems she's really trying to drop the afternoon one again, but her morning one is too early for it.  Poor thing keeps crashing at 4 or 5 for an hour or so, but won't go down any earlier like she used to.

  • Luke's been off and on with the 2nd nap over the last few months. Some days it happens, but more when he is with us. At DC I think he gets in one. With my mom its up in the air too, one or two. I guess it depends on his first nap also.

Yesterday he took a 3 hour first nap so I was surprised by the 1 hour second nap. But he did get up at 4 am... soooo.

I think its common around 12 months to start seeing signs of dropping it.
