S/O Herb Garden (new here as well)

I've already started my herb garden and it's growing really fast. This is my first time ever growing herbs. At what point can you start to us them?

By the way I'm Alyce and my DH and I live in the Houston surrounding area. We don't have any kids unless you call our spoiled little dog Mella our baby. :-) I hope to be on here more often (most of the time I'm on the Houston or the Decorating & Renovating boards).

  • One of the great things about having an herb garden is that you essentially prune them when you cut some off to use...and pruning encourages new growth! If you started with seeds, you probably want to make sure the plants have several shoots of growth with enough leaves. If you bought transplants, they are probably close to this stage. Keep in mind that the leaves give the plant its food, so if you cut off all the leaves, the plant can't make any food! Hope you love your herb garden! I use mine often in the summer, dry what I can't use (herbs at the store are $), use them for cut flower arrangements and even use the dried herbs for display inside.

    Welcome to the board!

  • Sorry I did forget to mention that I started with seeds with all of the plants. By the way does rosemary grow really slow? It seems like that is the only one that I'm barely seeing growth.

rosemary grows insanely slow. you will probably want to buy a transplant of that to use while you wait for yours to grow.

As a general rule, I never cut more than 2/3 of the plant for herbs, usually less.

Ditto. I started my rosemary container with a transplant. I must say though, it is one of my favorite herbs. I barely have to do anything to it at all to keep it happy. Best investment ever!
