Anyone installed a new kitchen floor?

We are in the process of buying our first house and we most likely will replace the kitchen floor. The laundry room is off the kitchen, and has the same floor, so that would be replaced as well.

We are trying to decide if this is something we could do ourselves or if we need to hire someone to do it. If you did this yourself, how complicated was it and how handy are you? What type of floor did you put in?

We are also trying to figure out what the best material would be. We would like something that is consider an eco-friendly option. We were debating on linoleum. Does anyone have linoleum flooring (natural linoleum, NOT vinyl) in their kitchen and/or laundry room?

Any flooring company recs in the Triad for either production selection/service or installation?

Any tips/advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Anyone installed a new kitchen floor?

  • I think it depends on what you want to do. We put in vinyl "plank wood" floors in one bedroom. That was really easy, we didn't need much more than an exacto knife and a handsaw for the 1/4 round. I don't know whether natural linoleum is harder to work with, though?

We had someone tile our kitchen floor and I'm happy we got someone else to do that. I think if we had done it, we wouldn't have done as good a job on the prep and we might have ended up with unevenness or cracking.  Our subfloor had a lot of movement to it, though, and needed to be reinforced and screwed down. And that's not just a line that our contractor fed us, there was significant difference in the bounce of the floor before/after he reinforced it. The screwing down wouldn't have been a big deal for us to do, but I don't know if we would have been able to do a good job bracing it. Also, our contractor used leveling compound to help with some of the dips, which is a step that I'm not sure we would known to do. I would be more inclined to DIY if the floor was on a concrete slab (or well-done subflooring) or if it were floating (like the vinyl we did). There are definitely a lot of options for a DIY-er.

  • Also, congrats on the impending purchase! Any features of the home that you are particularly excited about?
  • Hey Curbside!  Unfortunately I don't have any experience with doing our own floors, but I wanted to say congratulations on the new house!!  Are you staying in GSO or going elsewhere?

I think my home may have some more natural looking linoleum.  Our foyer is definitely not tile, but at first glance it looks like it.  Same with our kitchen.

When we decide to update the flooring in our kitchen (and sunroom probably) we're seriously considering cork flooring, but I think it might be more expensive than linoleum.  I was also considering bamboo (they have different hardnesses--some are too soft for a kitchen but others might be tough enough for the high traffic area), but don't think it would look as good with the rest of our hard wood floors.

I know one of my co-worker (that has moved several times in the 4 years I've known her) does swear by Weeks (I think they do do other kinds of flooring besides hardwoods).  Another lady that works for us had a TERRIBLE experience with Lumber Liquidators (the one on Wendover)--she hired them to install the flooring she picked out and just had problems every step of the way and actually had to hire someone else to re-do and fix what LL had done.  Now, fwiw, this lady does have a VERY thick accent (she's Brazillian) so that may have caused some of the problems...but we're able to communicate with her, so I couldn't imagine that that was really the cause.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

  • Thanks girls!

We are staying in GSO. Some of the features that we like is that it is a one level brick ranch with hardwoods everywhere but the kitchen/laundry room and the sun room. We would have potentially replaced any carpeting with hardwood or bamboo, so we are very happy to find something where that is not an issue. We are pretty excited about the neighborhood. The home is a little bit older than we were hoping, but we decided we needed to go older to stay in the area we wanted and still be in our price range. Since we did go a little older, we were also happy to find one with a two car detached garage.

We debated tile, if we went with tile, we would definitely hire someone. We also debated cork, but was not sure if it was appropriate for kitchen/laundry room.

    I will keep you posted.
