Freaking marriage penalty

For the past 6 years, I have always gotten a significant chunk of change back when filing my taxes.  Some years it was 3-4k, so I started claiming myself as a dependent but I still got back almost 2k.  This year, with the marriage penalty, I'm getting back $740, and I OWE the state $12!!!  WTF man!  I hate taxes!  /end vent.

what?! marriage penalty? what is that?! i was hoping i would get back MORE for being married!

Are you filing jointly or separately?  DH and I looked at both options before settling on the one that worked best for us.

We tried both.  We are one of the few exceptions that will get more back for filing separately due to the disparities in our income (DH makes about 30k more than me).

i dont know what this marriage penalty is....

but we got MORE back this year than last year while claiming the same exemptioms (since we forgot to change them when we got married). so i dont think this marriage penalty really affected our tax refund...

Uhhh....let's hope that we aren't affected by this. We meant to file out taxes yesterday but completely forgot. We're going to try jointly and separately so see which is best - hopefully we get some money back!!

That's odd.  We got more back this year than we've ever did before (with the exception of the first time home buyers credit).  I didn't even know that there was a marriage penalty!

We got more back too!  I'd heard of the marriage penalty, but I guess it didn't affect us.    I'm sorry you got hit by it!
