York, PA

Hi Everyone! DH is possibly being relocated for work to York, PA from Richmond, VA and we are working on determining where we would like to live in the area. We have been looking at areas between 10 and 40 minutes east of York because we would like to be as close as possible to my family in NJ (Princeton area) without making too long of a commute for DH. Some of the suggestions I've received are Red Lion/Dallastown, East York, Hempfield, and Columbia. We would like an area that is safe and close to shops/restaurants.

 Any suggestions? TIA!

Re: York, PA

  • I would say that it depends on how you plan on getting to Jersey.  If you plan on taking the turnpike, you might want to look north of York like in Etters, New Cumberland, Camp Hill, etc, but the other places you mentioned would be if you were going to take 30East to get to Jersey.  Just something to think about.  Good luck!

  • We live in Dallastown.  It takes about 10-15 mins to get to Route 83.  It takes about 45 mins to get to Baltimore MD or Harrisburg PA.  I really like the area.  We live in a really quiet developement and have a fantastic yard.  Restaurants and shops  aren't far away but you do have to drive to everything.  There are some great parks in the area.
  • You want to be sure to factor in traffic when looking at some of these locations, I live 15 minutes North of Red Lion, not far from 83, and it takes 45 minutes for me to get to Harrisburg in traffic. I'm sure being from VA you are used to it, but thought I would mention it. Camp Hill is a really nice area, as well as Mechincsburg. We live not too far off the Strinestown exit and it's in a good school district and centrally located to everything in York. However, there isn't as much fun stuff going on in York as there is up toward Harrisburg. We moved here two years ago from a larger city, so to me, the more fun things is really important. Hope it helps!
  • We live in Red Lion, its a nice area...I've lived both city and country so like someone said above it depends on what's important...It's a little quieter here and you do have to travel to everything however, you get a little more space for you money. However, if you are looking for a busy more city atmosphere I would suggest looking Harrisburg/Hershey.
