XP: Athens, GA (football game related)
I posted this over on travel, but thought I might be able to get some good answers here.
We are heading to Athens Sept. 30 through Oct. 3. It is for a football
game, but we will have some extra time in town and wondered if there is
anything else to do. I hear it is a really cool college town, but would
like to hear from some people that have actually been. Also, some
suggestions on restaurants would be much appreciated. As for
accommodations, I think we are going to be staying at the Holiday Inn
Express that is .5 miles from the stadium, but if anyone has a better
idea, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!

Re: XP: Athens, GA (football game related)
I've stayed at that hotel before. We stayed there last spring when DH's team was playing UGA (he's a coach in the SEC). It is a great location, just blocks from downtown, but the hotel staff is horribly rude and the customer service is terrible!!! Because of this (specifically the way I was treated at the front desk by the staff when I arrived while DH and his team was at practice and the experiences some of the players parents who also stayed there dealt with) I know that DH's team will never, ever stay at that hotel again because of the experience that we had and I also know that Auburn put the hotel on their "black list" so the travel agents don't book it for any AU team.
Downtown there are TONS of bars (and I'm pretty sure that's just a few blocks from that hotel). I think there is something like 70some bars in downtown Athens..crazy. There are lots of good restaurants right downtown, too. The Grill is an old fashioned diner downtown and it is really fun and the good is good, too. It is open 24 hours a day.
We also ate at East West Bistro and that was really good, too.
