I think I want a clematis

Remember I was asking about doing a cutting garden in a triangular bed. I'm considering adding two my trellises (sp) to the long wall that anchors the bed. Basically, the wall is the right side of my garage and it still could use some other interest (it's like 15-17ft long). I already have a Star Jasmine growing on a trellis and thought, hmmm, I could add two more for more interest.

So, I'm thinking about a clematis. I've seen a few in the neighborhood (usually around mailboxes), and think they are really really pretty. Anyone else have one?

And is this what happens to you when you start gardening? You can't stop adding new plants to the yard? LOL

I mean, look at it! It's so pretty!

  • because of you I'm adding a cutting bed in the corner of my yard.

I've had no luck with clematis.

  • When I was a kid I built an archway trellis and planted clematis on it.  It was one of my favorite plants at the time.  They are so gorgeous when they are in full bloom!

LOL yes when you are a gardener you are always wanting more plants.  Eventually, you need to give away plants so you can plant new ones in their place.  My wish list is getting pretty long too!

We may need to create a Gardener's Anon group. LOL

I've already given away so many of my lilies. They multiply so well, I just give them away. Last year, I dug them up and gave some away AND planted some under the dining room window. It became evident that my dream of hydrangeas under the window wouldn't work because the space got too much sun. So, I replanted lilies and added some dutch iris bulbs. I'm so stoked. I can't want to see the succession bloom - iris, lilies and then the daylilies take over!!

Should we ever move, my new house must have tons of yard space and either a well cared for garden or be a blank slate.

  • I have two- a purple one with medium sized flowers and a white one with miniature flowers.  I love them!

They've been really hardy and easy to take care of for me.  The purple one was here when we bought our house, and considering it survived the previous owners of my house, I don't think I could kill it if I tried!

  • There is an old saying about clematis: "they like their head in the sun and their feet in the shade".  Basically they need sun to grow well but they like cool roots.  I've seen plants planted closely that shade their roots or you can use an extra thick layer of mulch to keep their feet cool.
  • just be aware if you have a dog that clematis is very toxic.  We pulled ours up last summer once we learned this as we just didn't want to chance it.  Have yet to find a trellising plant that isn't toxic, boo.

That sucks. Luckily, our dog doesn't chew on any of our plants. But, I may need to keep that in mind for my neighbors. We all have dogs, and they all romp around in the yards to play sometimes.

    Yep.  :)

I have a clematis by my mailbox and it's one of the first to pop back up in the spring.  No maintenance necessary, other than cutting back the dead vines.

Have you looked at passionvine?  It's like the more exotic version of clematis to me, but it's native.  Attracts butterflies too!

  • I also recommend sweet autumn clematis.....really pretty vine covered in white flowers in September!
  • I have a clematis.  This will be it's third year growing around my mailbox.  The first year I had 1 bloom, last year I got three, my mom swears the third year is a really good year for them.  So I guess just be patient with it :)

The more standard the color and plant you buy the hardier it will be.  I'm not sure how that pink and white one will do.  I've never seen one in someones yard.  I have the basic purple/blue color.

I have a climbing rose on my trellis on the side of my house with our chimney.  I really like how it is doing.  It is also going to be 3 this year.  I think it's called Jacobs Ladder.  It has lots of blooms

I have two. One is the sweet autumn variety which is known in the trade as species clematis. I have it planted with a deep purple that blooms twice yearly. A big show around early June, another smaller show in July and then the species picks up for Labor Day. Mine are bulltproof.

Don't mulch clematis heavily, get shade from a ground cover.
