Can anyone tell me about Portland, Oregon??
It seems like a place that I'm interested in and might consider moving to in the future but I want to know from the locals, what's it like out there? How would you describe the lifestyle etc?
I currently live in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and I have always lived on the east coast but I'm dying for a change of pace and Portland looks really appealing...
Curious to see what you all think
Thanks!
Re: Can anyone tell me about Portland, Oregon??
Well, I love Portland! I've lived here most of my life. I love that it is a small city but has all of the draws of a big city. Great performing arts, etc.
I can't speak to schools because I'm 39 years old and pregnant with my first children, so I don't really know. I know my niece goes to a great school but it's outside of the city.
The location is great. It's nestled in a valley, but it's only an hour drive from the mountains, an hour and a half from the beach, two hours or so from the desert. There is great hiking all over the place.
However, if you don't like rain, don't come here. We get a lot of it. It's not like Florida rain where it pours for 30 minutes and then it's a bright beautiful day. Here it's grey, it drizzles, it drips, it pours, it rains and this can last weeks to months. Typically it starts October or November and can last until April, or worse, June. Not to say there are periods of beautiful days in between, but there is more rain than not during this time. It's hard on some people. The great part of the rain is that we have beautiful Springs and green summers. Winters are mild. We have more rain than anything, more ice than snow.
It's 4:30 AM, so I don't feel like I'm doing a great job. But, I love it here and don't really want to live anywhere else. Hope this helps a little and inspires other Portlanders to chime in and do a better job!
First of all, before you move here make sure you have jobs. Even before the economic downturn getting jobs here was sometimes difficult. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.
I've lived here for 7 years and I love it. As the pp said, it rains a lot here in winter. But thanks to that we have many green forests and waterfalls. Mountains are cool too. Lots of hiking opportunities if you're in to that. We have some pretty nice wineries in the area as well. Downtown Portland offers lots of entertainment with many nice restaurants. Lots of microbrew pubs. Check out the MovingToPortland blog and I think there's also OregonGetaways and another one about Portland that might be helpful.

I found out about a good magazine website that has good real estate information, which may be helpful to you in understanding the cost of living, the schools, crime rates, etc.

The general magazine website also has great things to do in Portland, probably a good way to learn about the city from a distance. GL!
