At the risk of sounding really stupid, I have a science question for you. In my Human Sexuality book, I read that the Y chromosome has about 80 genes, and the X chromosome has 1090.

Does that mean that the father contributes less genetic material to the baby than mother? Will the baby have more of the mother's traits than the father's? Or do the genes eventually just grow and multipy in the cells and kind of even out?

Sorry if this is really dumb. You've been so helpful explaining things in the past, (and my professor is kind of a deadbeat), so I figured I'd ask. Thanks!

Re: *Mrs.BoomBoom*

  • The Y chromosome is a little tiny thing and doesn't do much other than turn on the genes to make the fetus male instead of female.  Remember, dad only gives a Y chromosome to his son's so his genetic contribution to his daughter's would be the same as the mother's.  In a female, half our X chromosomes are turned off (x-inactivation) because otherwise we'd be overloaded  (that's how we get the spotting of a calico cat) but, yes, I guess you could say that the mom gives more of a genetic contribution to her sons than the dad does (and is responsible for passing so many x-linked traits to her sons like hemophilia, fragile X, color blindness)

(I'm using a lot of things that I'm guessing you're also seeing in your class/text so if you need any clarification, feel free to ask)
