$$ spent on gas (monthly) clicky

I think I just want to feel better about the insane amount of money that we spend on gas a month. Please humor me with this clicky poll.[Poll]

Re: $$ spent on gas (monthly) clicky

  • Too much! We each have a 45 minute drive to and from work... I know I go through a tank and a half of gas a week! 6 tanks ... about $240 a month. Holy wow. I didn't really think about it until you asked. Hmm

Yah. It's annoying to think about. We spend $500/mth total. Chris spends about $300 & I'm the other $200.. I use mint.com to track so I know that is an accurate number.. I'm over it.

  • I just looked at last month's bill and we spent $160.54.  Since I was out of town for work quite a bit that is slightly lower than normal.  I'd say in the $160-$200 range; thought hat number is quickly going to rise.

ETA:  I work from home.  H has a 15-20 min drive downtown morning and night.

  • I said $300-400. It's closer to $300. I'm a commuter- 64 mi/day but at least it's mostly highway. DH has a take home car so he doesn't 'commute' at all (gas is paid for by the department. Now don't get all crazy on me ladies- we live in the zone he works so he's 'at work' when he steps out the front door). Add in that we live in the middle of nowhere so we essentially have to travel to go do anything.

Chris used to have a company truck, that he could bring home and drive anywhere.. I miss those days.

  • I picked under $100. This is only possible because we do not pay for gas in H's car. His company pays for all of it. I only drive my car to pick DD up and run errands.
  • $75 a week for DH and $35 every 2 weeks for me. (Can you tell we drive DH's truck more than my car lol).
  • Oh crap.  I just did myself.  For the two of us, it's $500 easy.  Of course, I drive 80 miles a day to/from work, so that really eats up the gas fast.

  • I really feel bad for everyone who pays 500 or more.  I feel like we spend too much when it costs around 200 total to fill our cars.  Gas is rediculous, and it is only getting worse.  I think we can thank the oil companies for keeping prices up.  My mom and I were having a descussion about this this weekend.  I firmly believe when gas prices first went up years ago that it was becuase of the war and contries not wanting to export.  But after awhile I think the oil companies realized that people were willing to pay the higher prices and kept them inflated.  It sucks and I would use public transportation if that were an option, but unfortunately it is not.

It's nice that DH's Jeep has no miles on it and he can save on gas. We can't drive his car anywhere, it's marked so I'm not allowed to ride in it. I think he also has to be in some sort of uniform to drive in it too so he can't just take it for errands (not that he would anyway- he's shy about the whole thing Stick out tongue).

  • You poor people. I don't even know what gas costs around here these days, and it's glorious. Ignorance is bliss. I heart public transportation!

I dread the day we move back to reality and have to get cars. Ugggggh, cars. It sounds like I should start saving for gas now!

  • I'm lucky to live in Chicago where DH and I can walk or take public transportation for most things.  We do have a car, but we really only use it for grocery shopping or going to Target, which are about 5 miles away.  Gas is more expensive here than Florida though.  I'm pretty sure we're over $4/gallon.  Assuming we don't take the car on a weekend trip or something, I think we probably spend about $20 a month.  But my bus/train card is $90 a month, so we're still spending more than $100 for transportation.

  • I saw on the news last night that the most expensive gas station is in Orlando, across from the airport.  They're charging more than $5/gallon!  Yikes!

OMG, I stopped at this gas station one time after picking up SIL from the airport.  I had NO gas and had to stop, it was ridiculous how much their prices were inflated!

That's what the reporter was saying.  They take advantage of the tourists having to return their rental cars with a full tank.  Horrible.

  • I chose $100-200, even though "I live where there is public transportation" also applies to me.  I think we tend to go through about a tank of gas every week between DH's commute and the ocassional days (like today) when the weather stinks and I drive too.

Slightly off topic, I am very excited that we'll live a mile or less from work in KSA and gas there is less than $1/gallon.  It'll be nice.

The oil companies have a lot less influence over gas prices than most people think.  This article is a little old, but it explains the forces at play in changing gas prices pretty well:

    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5365439

The current spike is no doubt largely a reflection of the turmoil in Libya and Egypt.  Egypt is a net oil importer, but they control the Panama Canal (which most oil from the ME passes through) and are an important oil refiner.  Libya contributes less of our oil imports than say Saudi Arabia, but its oil is lighter and requires less refining and thus is more valuable per barrell.  They also are a significant player in oil refinery.

  • Probably $150-175 for H and I combined. He works from home and rarely goes anywhere; if we do go some place on weekends, we take my car. I commute less than 5 miles everyday.
