New to central Maine, OB recommendations?

My husband and I recently relocated to just outside of Augusta. We've since learned that we're 6 weeks pregnant with our first baby and I'm feeling a little lost. We don't know anyone in the area and aren't sharing the news with our families yet so I don't really know who to turn to for advice.

I haven't yet seen a doctor to confirm anything, we haven't actually established a family doctor yet. However, I did schedule an appointment with an OB in Augusta (Kennebec Valley Ob/Gyn) which I wont go in for until I'm 8 weeks. I'm finding it pretty hard to stay patient for the next two weeks before I get in to see my OB. I've been spotting the last couple days and while I know this can fall into the realm of completely normal, I'm a little concerned at their lack of attention to my worries. Basically I was told, if it gets worse go to the ER. To add to my paranoia, I feel like all the symptoms of pregnancy I've had have disappeared. No more sore boobs etc.

Does anyone have any feedback on this office? Would anyone suggest any alternatives? I've been considering CMMC in Lewiston too... I just have no idea where to start. Any feedback positive or negative is appreciated :) (I never thought I'd be so paranoid...)

Re: New to central Maine, OB recommendations?

  • I don't know any in that area, though I know that others on this board live there and I'm certain they can help.

But I did want to say congratulations on the pregnancy (it can be such a nervewracking/ exciting time!!!) and welcome to Maine and the board!!! There's lots of babies/ pregnant mommas here, so you're in great company!

  • I saw Julie Cox at KVOBGYN and loooooved her. Dr. Sulhany (sp?) did my c-section and I really liked her too. And the staff there is awesome.

I think you will have good luck with them. If you are worried about spotting I would give them a call and see if you can come in earlier. They were really good with me calling with any concerns.

  • I am in Southern Maine, so I don't have any OB recs for you, but I just wanted to say hi and congrats! This is a great group of ladies!

I also didn't have my first appointment with my son until I was 9 weeks and even that was just with the nurse. My first real appointment with the doctor wasn't until 11 weeks. However, when had some spotting around 6 weeks they had me go in for blood work to be sure everything was okay. I would keep looking around for a place that listens to your concerns and you feel comfortable with.

  • OK. I reread your post and saw that you did contact them and they said to wait it out. If it were me, I would call again and voice my concerns. I found them to be really understanding.

Did you talk to a doctor or a secretary?

  • I live in southern ME, so I can't help with doctor recommendations.

I'm genuinely sorry you're experiencing some spotting and are worried at this point in your pregnancy, however no doctor is going to be able to do anything to help you.  If the pregnancy is destined to end in miscarriage, the doctor can't prevent that.  No exam the doctor can perform at this point can tell you whether the pregnancy is going to remain viable.  Try to remain as calm as possible for the next two weeks.  <hugs>

  • I go to Waterville Women's Care (they have an office in Augusta too). I have only been once for a pre-conception check up, but I loved the DR I saw and am pretty sure if I do become pregnant I will stick with her. Her name was Karen Bossie. Their number is 877-7477. If you are concerned and think seeing someone earlier than 2 weeks would make you feel better, then if I were you I would insist that someone see you as soon as possible. However, I also know that it can be hard to get appointments so if you can't get anything sooner, just try to keep calm and hope that the two weeks goes quickly!

  • I went to Women's Health at St. Mary's in Lewiston and was very happy with my OB - Melissa Collard.  Just another option/place to throw out there.  Everyone at the office was great!

  • Thanks for all the warm welcomes :)

I'm lucky to have my nurse's and Dr's appointments on the same day just after my 8 week mark and if it weren't for this darn spotting I'm sure the wait wouldn't bug me too much. I do feel reassured to hear you had a positive experience with their office. This whole area is so new to me I don't even know where to grab a nice dinner let alone find pre-natal care. Its overwhelming :)

I think I'll take your advice and call again. I just feel so silly sounding so paranoid... although I'm sure they're used to that. Is it common to come in for early blood-work to check on hormone levels etc.?

Thanks again to everyone, its nice to have an outlet

Stick around! We often have get togethers, which is a great way to meet others and get out. There are a few of us in the Central Maine area, so if you have any questions about anything else feel free to ask.

Totally off topic, but since you mentioned it.... Liberal Cup in Hallowell and Last Unicorn in Waterville are both great places to grab a nice dinner among other places too :)

     Good luck with your appointments!

  • No rec's for you but I want to say welcome and congratulations!!!
  • Congrats on your pregnancy! I live out of state now, but there is a wealth of knowledge on this board about doctor recommendations in the area, and hopefully you'll have a great experience at the place you've already scheduled with. As mentioned, the OB's office is used to handling lots of questions and concerns regarding pregnancy, so I would definitely give them a call back to help put your mind at ease. I was extremely paranoid during my first trimester, but have relaxed a lot more, a lot of which was thanks to a very patient office staff! Smile

And I totally agree with MIB about Liberal Cup- their food is fantastic, and if your DH is a beer drinker, their handcrafted beers are excellent!

  • I don't have any recs either other than to second the suggestion that you call back for reassurance!  The wait for the first appointment is so hard...with both my pregnancies I had the same feeling that I no longer "felt pregnant".  I did pee on some extra sticks to ease my mind. :)

Not that it makes you feel any better, but Kimberly is right.  As someone who had an early miscarriage, this was exactly what I was told by my midwife.

However, I was also someone who had spotting at the start of her successful pregnancy, so maybe that will help to reassure you.

In any case, I would call them back and see if you could go in to have the blood work done,  so at least you know either way and don't have to spend the next two weeks wondering.

I used Susan Jacoby at CMMC OB/GYN and delivered at CMMC.  I had a wonderful experience and would not hesitate to recommend them!

  • I called their office back and was amazed at their response. They wanted me to come in right then and there. I'm now back and have had blood work done and my first ultrasound. After this appointment and meeting the women there, I know I made the right choice. They were all so awesome and compassionate!

That said, I'm a little more confused now as we'd thought I was 6 weeks along, but based on the ultrasound they're thinking I'd be more like 4.5weeks along. The only thing we saw was the yolk sac. :( They'll be getting back to me about my blood work later today or tomorrow then Friday I'll go back in for more. Fingers crossed everything is okay.

Funny you mention the Liberal Cup, that was the first spot we tried in Hallowell. My husband and I looove micro-brews and enjoyed it there. Seems like most spots in Hallowell are a safe bet, no? So far we've tried out there, Slates and The Depot. I'm loving the recommendations to please feel free to throw a few more our way.

Again, thanks for the welcomes and support!

  • Hi, I'm Jess...I live and work right in Augusta.  I used KVOBGYN and I LOVED them.  There staff is fabulous and the MD's are awesome too.  Dr. Sulhaney was my favorite but the rest are good too. I'm glad you could get in with them. I also loved loved loved my experience at MeGeneral.  Just was easy and reassuring.  Oh, and we use Kennebec Pediatrics if you need one of those...and I can give you the name a fabulous DCP if you need/want that too!!

The Liberal Cup is fabulous...I'm a chain restaurant kinda girl, so we love Red Robin.  I also want to try Rooster's.  There is also a great BBQ place on Water St called Riverfront Bar (I think).

Hopefully you can come to a GTG soon!

You can't go wrong with pretty much anything in Hallowell! :) Slates is my favorite, if you like Thai Cafe De Bangkok is good and I hear Clube 223 has really good brick oven pizza.

In Waterville Last Unicorn is great. Mainly Brews is a great place if you like beer, and Amici's is a new italian place that is supposed to be really good!

I am one of the central Maine ladies on here too! :) Welcome! :)

  • All this restaurant talk has me starving!! I had been so curious about Cafe Bangkok but for some reason was a little skeptical about it. I could dive into a good Thai dish right now, so that might have to be our next stop!

Thanks for all the recommendations! My husband is away from Monday to Friday for the next little bit and I think when he comes home he'll be wondering if I've been dating someone else with all these new leads on restaurants I have.
