My DS's Butt

Just a lurker here, but I have a baby question that you ladies hopefully can answer. At my son's 9 month check-up the doc recommended that I begin to suppliment his fat intake with formula.

History: He has been breast fed since birth, but my supply is has decreased and he no longer gets very much. Nursing has become a nightly "comfort" thing instead of a food thing.

The doc gave me two containers of Enfagrow. It's a formula for older babies. I know nothing about formulas.

Anyway, DH and I are starting to see a very bright red patch of skin encircling his little #2 area. It doesn't seem to cause him pain, but it is there inside his crack area like an oval shape. He has never had anything like this before. I assume it is from the formula. Research I have done online states that it may be from a pH being too high.

My questions:

1. What creams can I use to help him?

2. Do I need to change formula brands?

3. Are there bath soaking treatments that we can use?

Thanks!

Is he eating regular (baby) food as well?  You might be able to alter the baby food and keep the formula.  Or speak to the doctor about changing the formula.

  • Maybe also try posting this on your local bump board; I'm sure they will have some ideas for you, too.  GL!

  • He may not even need the formula if he's eating solids and still getting some BM.  But talk to your pedi about it, and whether there are other ways to up his fat intake, and what other formula options there are for him.
