Hello there! My fianc? and I just found out that he might be relocated to a home office in Kansas City soon after our May wedding. We've begun to poke around at some of our house options out there, but it's hard to do being all the way here in PA! Anyone care to point us in the right direction, please? We want something with high "walk-ability" around town, so looking for more urban or town-y than the suburbs (live in the 'burbs now and I'm sick of driving everywhere!). I came across River Market and that seems to have a lot of what we're looking for. Do you have any advice on that area or a suggestion of another area for us to check out? Just want to get a head start on this! Thanks
Re: Move to KC from Philly
Hi! I grew up in Kansas city... now I live not too far away in Overland Park with my fiance (we are getting married in July. congrats on your May wedding!) What kind of budget are you looking at? Would you rather have an apartment, condo, house...? Anyway, there are some cool lofts in towntown KC. They are very trendy and great if you want to be in the middle of all the action. The only problem with downtown is that parking can be difficult, but there are lots of places you can walk! Another great area is the Plaza area. Housing right by the Plaza can get pretty pricy, but there are some apartments/townhomes on the Plaza that are decently prices. And you will literally be right in walking distance of alot of cool shops and trendy restaurants, and a very nice movie theater with decently priced tickets. Parking may be an issue there as well, although many of the apartment complexes have reserved parking for you. If you go a little north of the Plaza area you will be in Westport, which is also a very trendy area. There are some nice homes around that area. Just be aware that Westport can get pretty crazy on Friday and Saturday nights because of all the bars. And, Westport can be a little sketchy at night just be careful with that. Also I should let you know that in KC, the closer to the state line you live, the better. If you go too far east things will start to get sketchy for a few miles. Be very cautious if you go east of Troost, and especially if you go east of The Paseo. This area used to be really nice (the houses are actually really pretty,) but sadly in the past years it has realy become kind of dangerous, sorry to say.
Hope this helps a little! Let me know if you have any more questions, I know the area pretty well!
Most people in KC live in the suburbs, so it really might not be what you're looking for. There are condos and lofts in downtown KCMO but they aren't very popular. I'm not quite sure why people here don't like living downtown, although it may have something to do with the lack of public transportation options. Like all cities, it's hard to find parking downtown. And we have a bus system, but it's pretty weak and no one really uses it. There's no train or anything like that. So anyway, everyone I know lives in the suburbs and drives to work, that's just kind of how it is here. If you want to stay close to the city, I'd look in Brookside and/or Waldo neighborhoods (both in Kansas City, MO) and maybe the city of Mission, KS (or Mission Hills, KS if you have a large budget!).
The KC metro area covers both Missouri and Kansas. On the Kansas side, housing is more expensive but there are more amenities. Stick with Johnson County, KS. Wyandotte County is being revived but a lot of parts of "the dot" are still pretty sketchy, especially the areas closer to downtown KC. Good cities in Johnson County are Mission, Roeland Park, Overland Park, Lenexa, and Olathe (Olathe's a little further out of the city, though). On the Missouri side, good cities are Liberty, Parkville, and the northern parts of Kansas City, MO (Park Hill School District), plus Lee's Summit and Blue Springs to the east.
