Doctor question

Do you see a male or a female doctor for your yearly paps, or for your OB if you are pregnant/had a baby?

I have always had a female, and just feel weird about having a male.

I am currently in need of a new OB/GYN (need a new Rx for BCP!), and want someone who will be able to delivery our next baby if we have one so I won't have to change doctors in a year or two.

I had a natural birth with Finley and would really like to do it again. So many people here recommend the same doctor as far as natural births.. and it's a man. I am torn. I feel like a woman understands better, and I don't... Am I crazy? Do I go for the male doctor?

I felt the same way you do before I started going to my Dr. In my case I had switched insurances and the only same-town option was a man. 

He is awesome. I feel like he is just as sensitive as the women I have seen before and he has a great attitude about birth (that it's a natural process and we should do as little intervention as necessary). I have felt very comfortable from the first appt I had. Even H, who wasn't a fan of me going to a male Dr, likes him a lot and is happy he will be delivering our baby.

So I say go check this guy out. If you're not comfortable you can always go to someone else, it's not like your married to your Dr :-)

I have only been to women, but I was "birthed" by a male doctor. ha!

I'm way too chicken to go to a man b/c I'm super awkward in life in general. I crack up when the woman doctor does the boob check and I can't even imagine how much I would laugh with a man. He probably wouldn't even get the exam completed. I'm giggling just thinking about it!

I do however see a female OB.  I was seeing a male OB/GYN when I was pregnant with Gabby, until I was about 20 wks when I decided to switch.  I switched to my current OB because of her reputation as being amazing with natural births.  At the time, the OB I was seeing was not really entertaining the idea of me going natural and was kind of being a jerk about it.  My current OB - I love.  I feel like her being a woman and having children of her own allows her to understand more of what I am feeling/going thru - but then it could just be that she's awesome and I like her and I personally haven't had luck with male OBs. 

 

If you need to switch, don't think twice about it.  It's better to fully mesh with your OB than to suffer thru with someone who is not on the same page as you.

I make faces when I'm uncomfortable. At my first appt my current Dr asked if I was ok mid check up. Very embarassing but his professionalism definitely helped! I haven't gotten the giggles yet thank God!

I've only been to women.  First nurse practitioner at PP, and now my OB/GYN.  I'm so uncomfortable with my body that there is no way I could get naked in front of a male, even a doctor. 

Although, when I went to L&D the resident on duty was a male, so I had to deal with him checking me out.  It wasn't the worst thing, but it was just for that. 

Having to discuss my fertility issues with a male and expecting him to understand what I'm dealing with, I just don't see that happening.  I loved my doctor after my first yearly exam and she didn't dismiss my fears or blame the delay in getting pregnant on my weight.

I see a female now, but if we decided to have a baby I would switch over to my doctor's husband.  He delivers and she does not.  I don't think I'd have a problem with him because he is highly recommended.  Definitely do whatever makes you comfortable though.

I've always gone to females, but there is one male in my OB practice now that I imagine I will see once (we see all the doctors before delivery) and I'm sure I'll be nervous for that. I always said I'd *never* go to a male; I am so uncomfortable with my body and hate going to the gyn anyways...but now that I'm pregnant and more used to going often, I think if he came highly recommended that I'd consider it.

Honestly, I do not care one way or the other. 

For the first 5 years or so I had a male doctor.  He was about 100 years old and I felt very comfortable with him.  You just kinda knew that there was no question he hadn't heard or no situation he hadn't encountered.  I trusted him.

He recently retired so I had to find a new doctor - I just happened to find a female.  She's fine.  But, honestly, I do not have a preference between the two.

I kinda understand the "she gets me" idea, but to me...they both went to medical school...he understands the female body just as much as she does.  So, I don't really care if he has a wang.  LOL!

My BFF (she is an RN) used them (stacy hudepohl) for her natural birth at good sam. she had nothing but great great things to say but who knows.
