UPS - 0, Random stranger - 1

I was on the phone about 5 different times with UPS customer service Tuesday night. My "very valuable" Forever 21 shipment was showing as delivered on the tracking, however there were no signs of that bright yellow bag anywhere on my property.

UPS customer service finds out my bag was delivered Monday night at 6:22 to a yellow house. I live in a blue house. So I had to tell F21 to tell UPS something they already know so they can open an "investigation" for my bag of cheap and trendy clothes.

But tonight I hear my doorbell rang and someone scurry away from my house to a running car.  Some nice person ventured out in the pouring rain to return my F21 bag!  Screw you, UPS, and high five random stranger.

So, my question is -- if you received a package that was not your name or your address would you go deliver it to them?

  • I think it would depend on how badly they screwed up. If the neighbor was nearby (i.e., 1234 Main Street if I lived at 1144 or something), then yes. Otherwise, I'd call UPS and/or the shipping company and find out how to return it to them. I wouldn't keep it for sure.

  • Well, that happened several months ago. I tried to get Fedex to come pick it up and redeliver it, but they wanted soooo much information from me and the package. How hard is it to drive back, pick it up and take it several blocks away since you're driver can't read street names?!  DH delivered it to the rightful owner. We would have wanted someone else to make sure we got out mis-delivered package one way or another.

ETA: the problem with giving fed-ex info was that I tried to call them on my way out, so I didn't have the package to read numbers off to them. And they were driving me nuts, so I gave up on them.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

I love that they make it harder for the poor unsuspecting person to whom they've just dumped someone else's shiit. As the person who paid for the shipping I shouldn't have to do work to get my package, and the person who did get shouldn't have to do anything either. "Dear FedEx/UPS, this isn't mine. Come get it and give it to its owner. Kthanx."

  • Ooooh, I've got a sort of similar story, w/o the nice random stranger ending. At the business I used to work at, a small package got mixed in with a shipment to us. It was a Christmas package to a college student and had a tin of home made cookies inside. Well, the girl who received the shipments was a real hosebeast and chose to OPEN the package and EAT the cookies. I happened to walk by her desk and saw the name on the package and recognized it- it was for the girl I sat next to in my freshman econ class.

At first I was shocked she would just disregard someone else's mail that way. She didn't seem to think it was an issue so I totally let her have it about not only opening someone else's mail but eating their homemade Christmas cookies. I think I made her feel bad enough that she finally wrote a note to the sender explaining that the package was accidentally delivered to the business and that it was "damaged" to the point of being undeliverable. I never mentioned it to my classmate because I was so embarrassed about my coworker.

  • Depending on if it wasn't too inconvenient, I would try to deliver and misdelivered package.

BUT, we had to go to the main FedEx office to pick up a held package (they kept trying to deliver when I wasn't home) only to find out it was for the previous owner of our house.  I know the owner's new address, but they wouldn't forward it, nor would they give me the package.  I felt slightly bad that their package got returned to sender when I knew where it needed to go, but I also couldn't do anything about it.

  • KB, that story makes me so angry.
