Chickens are awesome.  We actually took a class about raising them that was super helpful.  It is kind of a pain when you first get the chicks because they need to be kept very warm at all times so they need to be indoors.  Then they sort of go through this awkward phase where they can get out of the box, and are messy.  We got our chicks at the end of February which I would not do again...I would wait until the weather was a little better because we ended up having to keep chickens indoors longer than I liked.

Now that they are out in the coop they are so easy to care for other than the occasional broody or sick hen.  Our are good layers, and we still got an egg a day out of each of them throughout the winter.

Re: ~LadyE~

  • Right now, DH is saying absolutely not. I still hold out hope that he'll change his mind when we move. I keep telling him that maybe the Canadian geese won't come on the yard if we have chickens... But obviously I don't know if there's any truth to that.

You don't have a rooster right? Everyone tells me chickens are loud but I think it's only the males not the females, right?

I also REALLY want a pig.

  • We don't have any roosters.  We originally got nine baby chicks, and two of them were male.  The man we purchased the chicks from had told us we could return the roosters to him.  He had this huge property, and he just keeps the males...lets them just run wild.  Roosters are loud!  As soon as ours started getting loud we returned them.

I also really want a pig!  I would love two sheep as well.  Ha ha ha.  I really wish I had a small farm.

  • I want a farm, too! I want goats. Eventually, horses and cows. And a peacock!
