Living Room Colors!?

I don't really have good design ideas and this is my currently empty family room, I was just wondering if any of you had any ideas about what color might work in here. I have a cream colored couch (so leaving it this color would be WAY to much cream!)

I was thinking maybe a dark gray?

Thanks for any ideas in advance!

Re: Living Room Colors!?

  • Could you make one wall a color and leave the rest neutral?

    I am "deaf-initely" one of a kind.

  • How much light does the room get?  It looks like a big room - is it?

I like the idea of doing one wall a darker color.  Or, you could get different color window treatments, pillows, etc. and keep the room the same color.  In general, I like lighter rooms b/c I like a lot of light, and my rooms are small so I like the spacial effect that a light room brings.

  • People always make the mistake of painting a room a color they like and then trying to find fabric and materials to match and coordinate. This is the wrong way to do it. The correct/best way is to find something that you love or inspires you. A vase? A pillow? A painting? A rug? A special gift from someone? Then, base your wall colors off of that inspiration.
  • Ditto pp, find something with a pattern and colors that suit you current furniture, then base off of that.

You may also want to repost this to the Decorating and Renovating board- paint colors are a popular topic there!

  • I think a blueish gray would be really pretty with a cream couch.  Blue and tan is my favorite color combo.
