Question about Ereaders and iphones

I'm contemplating getting an Ereader but I have a few questions.

First, I'm leaning more toward a Nook over a Kindle because the Nook is compatible with the public library Ebook consortium and the kindle is not. I have to double check on the Sony Reader about this.

I heard you can also access your book from your iphone, ipad, etc. (I have neither but maybe one day I'll get an Iphone.) Let's say I get a Nook and want to read from the Nook when I work out inside, but when I go for a run I want to listen to the book (where I left off) on my Iphone. Is that possible or would I have to purchase a seperate audioversion of the book?

Re: Question about Ereaders and iphones

  • It's definitely possible. It connects to your account so you can access it from whatever app you are using - iphone, ipad, etc.

I haven't done it yet but my sister has a Kindle and she's contemplating giving it to my mom because she reads all of her books on her ipad Kindle app now...

  • I think you have to buy separate versions (regular and audio) of the book, unfortunately.  But if you're checking them out of the library maybe you would be able to check out both at the same time, for free.

  • The Kindle has a text-to-speech function, but I don't believe it works on the app (only on the device). It is also a very robotic voice, which you might not be able to stand for very long.

My gut is telling me you'd really need to buy a separate text and audio book. However, then you won't have the syncing between the two, which would make it more of a pain than it is worth IMO.

  • I think you may need both the reader and the audio book to do that. Double check though.

Also, if you read a lot be sure to really examine the screens on both the Nook and the Kindle. I prefer the Kindle screen to the Nook for readability and preventing eye strain.

  • I don't know about Nook but Kindle allows you to read/listen from all your devices. Before I got my Kindle I actually was able to download the free app to my smart phone and could read books without actually getting a Kindle. I would guess that the other readers would allow you to do the same.
