Possibly moving to Scottsdale
Hello everyone!
My DH and I are currently considering moving to Scottsdale from Chicago. We currently have a few friends and family in the Scottsdale area. What I am wondering about (and this may sound silly) but I am very much afraid of scorpions and snakes. They just totally freak me out. I am just wondering for those of you who have lived in Scottsdale, how often have you actually seen one? Any other critters I should know about? It would be nice to get away from the cold weather here and actually be able to have a pool! TIA!!
Re: Possibly moving to Scottsdale
I also think it is more about how close you are to mountians, etc.
We live on a hillside property and have seen scorpions a few over the years, but we live ON a mountain.

My parents have been out here since '91//92ish and I have been off and on as well (took a side trip to college in Tucson and lived in Vegas for a while). I know my Mom has seen one and I have seen one in that amount of time.
My mom got scared and trapped in our alley kitchen at the time. She didn't know anything about scorpions and couldn't find the bug spray. So, since she had just been grocery shopping she took out her aerosol hair spray and sprayed the thing until it's tail uncurled and he became stiff. She then smooshed it with her shoe.
As for me, the thing was so small, I put a drinking glass over it, slid a piece of paper under it and dropped it outside.
Pretty much rule of thumb is the longer your area has been developed, the less you will see of either scropions or snakes. I currently live across the street from a reservation and I've seen more coyotes, quail and javalina than I have any scorpion or snake. Scottsdale is pretty built up, so for the most part you don't have much to worry about.
Even out in the "wild" when going hiking I haven't seen really anything to be scared of. I've only heard of two people encountering a snake when hiking. One was on a mountain outside of Phx and the other was in the area of Black Canyon that hasn't been developed at all.
