How to pack?

I don't even know where to start. I know its only mid March and we should have until the baby is born, but I feel like time is flying and there is little time left to get my house packed.

Plus, when we move out of here, we are moving in with my parents and so I'll need to have enough for the 4 months we live with them. Then we are moving to a rental so I'll need all my winter clothes for then. So I feel like I need to be methodical in my packing.

But DH is in no rush to get packing and I just don't know where to start.

Re: How to pack?

  • I would pack up all the summer stuff, since you are not using it right now and will need it first, then I would start packing the extra linens, photos from the walls, books, movies, paperwork, kitchen appliances you don't use as often, guest bedroom stuff...anything you don't think you will need/use between now and the move... then when you get closer your clothes and hubby's clothes, extra dishes, etc.

I always leave the boys stuff to last because they need to have the same semblance of normalcy for the longest...

This sounds like a good plan!

    Perfect plan!

  • When we moved, I tried to do a box a day.

  • ahh, yes, the chore of packing. We had to do this in stages.  Stuff to declutter in selling process, moving which entailed storage and then stuff we needed at my parents house.  Pretty much exactly what you're doing.  Start picking up boxes at cardboard dumpsters.  Seriously, don't pay for them, and if you go to a staples or other box store, you can usually find sturdy, similar size boxes.  A boat store was where I found the best ones.  I  put a box or two in each room, label it with the room and a couple of items that are in it. If you make a list that's more helpful, but I lost track.  At least with one item, it would jog my memory of what's in there.  Start filling each box with items you won't use until you're in your house. Then items you're taking to your rental, then to your parents.  And keep on filling....  Are you renting a storage unit?  How are you arrange it is key - trust me.

Here's what works for us for clothes, get bins and label summer/winter.  Put your winter stuff in and then make the switcheroo when you're ready.  The nice tight fitting lids keep all the rascals out.

Good luck!  The end result is worth it but challenging from now until then.  Yay for new chapters!

  • Thanks ladies. Great advice. I think where I keep feeling stuck is that I'm huge right now and I have no idea what is going to fit.

I think this week I'm going to bring the newborn essentials over to my parents, the tub, jumper, exersaucer, etc. Then the 0-6 months clothes. I think we'll do our clothes last.

Luckily for me, as a teacher, we just got TONS of books and supplies in and I absolutely raided the boxes, so we're doing pretty good there. I also went and bought a bunch of plastic tubs for clothes and photo albums so that no humidity could get it.

Jess, I may be asking for your guidance and moral support through the next months ;)
