Anyone make their own baby food?
Davan turns 6 months on the 16th. She loves to eat her cereal and is now starting to naw on my breast when breastfeeding. I thought I would start reviewing how to make baby food. I have been looking at this website, http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/index.htm
I was looking at starting with a vegetable. I thought I heard or read to start with veggies instead of fruits. Does anyone have any experience they could share?
I read on the above website to use the frozen food within a month, again, any experience with this?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Jen
Re: Anyone make their own baby food?
I think the idea with veggies over fruit is that fruit is sweeter so some babies prefer it so it's better to start with veggies so they don't know what they're missing
I didn't do this. I just alternated between the two. Both kids took to solid foods differently so I don't think there's one right way. DS1 ate everything as soon as we gave it. It wasn't until 7 1/2 months that DS2 would cooperate and open his mouth to eat food! I made food for DS1 and it was pretty easy. I haven't made any yet for DS2. You could start out with bananas and avocado--easy since you don't have to cook them or anything! Sweet potatoes and squash are easy, but some foods like green beans and peas are really hard to get super smooth for "1st foods." I waited until baby was ready for thicker consistency to make those and just used store bought.
Another thought...the food is definitely fresher and probably better for baby, but you don't necessarily save tons of money. Have fun!
I have a few blog posts in my cooking blog with regard to homemade baby food. It's fun and easy for the most part.I will say that I've relaxed a bit on my stance for home made since having my second baby. Do it if it works for you,and if not, its not going to hurt to use jarred either. Breast milk is still the main source of nutrient so it's going to be more important when they go to table food to have a high quality food source then.
Since my girls got breast milk, they were used to sweet things anyway, so even though I started with avocado, it was followed by bananas. I'd go with whatever you want. Both of my kids are good eaters. Who knows if it's because of the variety they ate (which you can't really find in jars) or if it's just luck. I made batches of about 5-6 servings which was about right for us. My girls only ate purees for about a month or two before wanting chunks instead. We never had to keep it for more than a month.
I made all of DS1 baby food. It was really easy. I steamed the veggies then used the Braun Blender Chopper: http://www.amazon.com/Braun-MR430HC-Multiquick-Blender-Chopper/dp/B00004S9GX/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1299985456&sr=8-3
I have a great baby food cookbook that gives recipes and menus (I'll get the name of it later...when I'm near the kitchen
).
I very rarely had to freeze the food. For example, I would steam a bunch of broccoli, blend it up and put it in the storage containers. I would do a carton of blueberries and put them in storage containers and refrigerate; then for a meal DS would get one container of broccoli and cereal with blueberries for dessert...or blueberries and a banana. There are so many options when you make your own!
