how has it impacted you thus far?
we gave up: eating out completely, to include others buying us food; eating sweets, and being negative. jeff personally gave up, as well, eating meat for the entire 40 days.
initially it was fairly easy, until this weekend. saturday we went to a parade and packed our lunches so we had something to eat - GREAT idea and money saving! i was already carrying my camera in a backpack so i was easy to just drop some pb&j sandwiches and fresh carrots right in there. the toughest parts have been not picking up coffee while we're out and not eating with family. we attended a birthday party dinner yesterday and, along with only having water while everyone around us ate at a restaurant, we didn't share in the birthday cake that was given to my grandma for her 75th birthday. that was tough.
negative thoughts? whooo...it's a lot more difficult not judging someone than i thought!
Re: for those observing lent...
I haven't officially been observing Lent, though I am aware that it's here. I'd say that I gave up chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, deli meat, sushi, and going to work, but that's the pregnancy talking.
If I were to observe Lent, the best thing I could probably give up would be fast food (something I should give up for the pregnancy but haven't --- so hard to resist those Egg McMuffins).
As for actions - it would be good to stop worrying so much (and yes, judging others). I would do well to be less critical and to stop feeling the need to be (or prove that I am) right all the time.
Well, thanks for this post Jeni... got me thinking!

Kudos to you Jeni! It's not going to be easy but Jesus never had it easy!
I've given up eating sweets after dinner. It has been difficult for me because I do it ALL the time. It's never a lot but just enough to satisfy. It is definitely an eye opener at what you put in your mouth, etc.
Good luck with your 40 days (now 35)!!

Kiki - you get a pass when you are pregnant...you don't have to give up anything! really!
Instead of giving something up, I decided I would make sure I went to Mass every week during Lent. So this weekend, because of the lost hour, I didn't make it. Major Lent fail....
I decided at the last minute to change what I would give up to make it something that would take an effort to do, and also that in so doing would help to make me a better person...so....
I gave up the use of my favorite profanity...and I do have to say, it isn't easy, as it just kind of comes out naturally! But I am noticing that my efforts are paying off, and rather than finding a subsitute bad word, I'm just not cursing as much...so I think that's a good thing :-)
argue about anything to my husband and family. I always put my two cents in when I believe something is unfair. So for the next 35 days I am keeping my mouth shut... LOL
