Retaining wall in backyard?

Hi there, just visiting with a quick question :)

A potential house that DH and I like has a sloping backyard and we'd like to have a retaining wall built to level it off and maximize the size of the lot.  The price of the house is well below what we are intending to spend, so we'd be willing to look into this.

Just curious about cost...thanks!

Re: Retaining wall in backyard?

  • I think there are too many unknowns to get even a hint of a price.  How long would the wall be? How high?  Those factors usually determine if you are going to need an engineer.   We are planning on installing a wall this year and if it would be over 4 feet we would need an engineer.  Are you going to do it yourselves or hire someone?  What kind of materials are you planning?  Wood, stone, concrete?  Simple design or complex design?  Stairs? Are you going to need heavy equipment and can you get it into the backyard?  How much grading will be necessary?
