Moms of bigger babies

AJ's consistently been in the 95% and up for weight. At his last appt, his pedi said he's in the honeymoon phase of eating, and that we could expect him to become pickier any time. That's not happening at all. He could eat all day long. If we'd let him, he'd eat as much as DH eats for meals. When he finishes a meal, he becomes angry if others are still eating, and tries reaching for their food. Yesterday he had a moment of boredom and stood by his high chair, pointing and crying. He couldn't have been hungry because he had eaten a full lunch less than an hour earlier. His daycare provider has mentioned his incessant appetite several times.

He's active (walking and attempting to run), but he seems to be getting chunkier instead of leaner. I'm getting a little concerned about his eating habits. His full switch seems to not work quite right.

Has anyone experienced this?

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.

Re: Moms of bigger babies

  • Katen is like this only she's skinny. (Although Ana, also in the 95th%, could do it too if I let her.) She would literally eat all day long. What we finally had to do was work into a solid eating schedule. Breakfast when she wakes, snack at 9:15, lunch at 11:30, snack when waking from nap, dinner, and quick snack before brushing teeth. Generally it's only a 2 hour stretch for her each time. It was actually hard at first but once it was a little more regulated, her body got used to not needing food in between. I think you hit the nail on the head that sometimes they're eating out of boredom. Heck I eat out of boredom sometimes.  ;)

  • I was/am concerned about the same thing.  Kellen is consistently in the 80s-90s %, and he will eat as much as I will eat.  I am wondering if I should cut him off, but once he is full, he starts playing with his food, so I know he knows when he is full (it just seems a little much for me!).  I am hoping that he will stretch out soon (he is still not walking a lot), but until then, try to give him foods that are on the healthier side.  I think they will grow out of it (actually- I hope, otherwise I will have a 300 lb kiddo!!!).  His dad was a chunk at this age, then during junior high and high school became a string bean.  I am sure that they will grow in to that phase!

  • El is the same way! SHE LOVES TO EAT! H will eat cereal when he gets home, she'll sit by him and eat it with him! Given he eats LIFE cereal! LOL So she LOVES it! But when she starts spitting her food out I know she's done.

Could you give him more protein? LIke PB and a banana? or a hard boiled egg to help fill him up at snack time? I liked Mrs. Reems idea. That might help too?

  • Thanks ladies! AJ's already on a structured eating schedule (similar to Mrs. Reem's). We'll figure out a way to redirect him from always wanting to eat.
