laurainMI and other freezer owners

We have been looking at freezers for about a year and i would love to get one before summer.  What size do you have? Any recommendations?

Re: laurainMI and other freezer owners

  • We have a small upright. I think it really depends on what you want to put in there. Are you looking to buy in bulk? Do once a month cooking?

I keep 2 bags of Ice on the bottom,  in there just in case we loose power. 1 shelf for frozen veggies, 1 of meats, another for Pizza and breads, I use the door to for big batches of soup's like chili, Ravioli soup, chicken broth for soups too.

Downside that our freezer is out in the garage and not the house, so I have to keep a list and try to rotate things through.

  • We have a refrigerator size upright. We got it at Sears and have been very happy with it :knock on wood:

  • Good idea with the ice bags just in case.  I guess we should keep that in mind when determining size.  We mostly want to buy in bulk.  I do like to freezer cook with my sisters so I would want room for those meals as well.
  • We have a fridge sized upright in the basement.  Great for our frozen garden harvest (we have a shelf of tomatoes alone).  I've found that having it is saving us money at the store.  We buy bread when there are great sales and freeze the loaves.  Same for veggie burgers.  I do a lot of make double meals and freeze one.  We use the whole space available in there most of the time.

Ours is an undertimined age.  Jim bought the house from his grandparent's estate when they died.  The freezer stayed.  His parent's think it was in the family before my MIL was dating FIL, so... 45 or so years?  Works really well still.  yippie!

  • I have a smaller upright - it has 4 shelves, counting the bottom.

I use mine when I go in on a portion of beef with my family - usually I take 1/3 of my mom's 1/2 so 1/6 of the cattle.

I also use it for freezer meals when I'm gearing up for the busy times at work.

I don't have advise on picking one out - I got the first one available on craigslist.
