Moving to Fort Lauderdale!

I recently got accepted into Nova Southeastern University's physical therapy program which starts at the end of May. So my husband and I will be moving there from Nebraska. Could anyone give me opinions on the best areas to live in and maybe the best way to go about looking for an apartment online? We want to live in a fairly nice area but don't want to go into debt from rent. Also if you happen to know anything about the school that you'd like to share that would be great as well. Thanks!

Re: Moving to Fort Lauderdale!

  • I have been doing major research for Miami as we're looking to move soon too. We've concentrated on Broward County which have "a" rated schools. greatschools.org is a great place to look. We really liked Weston, Cooper City and Davie. I don't know too much further north than that.
  • DH and I are going to be looking at houses in that area in a couple of weeks. We want to find a winter home to escape the RI winters.

We are going to be looking in Davie, Coconut Creek and a couple other towns. I'll can post back when we get back.

  • We moved to Plantation (Broward County) a few month ago...I found this website somewhat helpful: http://www.city-data.com/forum/fort-lauderdale-area/  Our house is a 5 minute drive from Nova SE.

    Best of luck!

  • Nova is a great school... I live like 10 min from there a great place to live with the best public school near there is cooper city (where I live)  There aren't very many apartments though mostly single family homes.  Davie is nice buy there a some parts that are sketchy be careful.  Plantation is beautiful and a little further south is pembroke pines also nice and several apartment complexes with decent schools.  I have lived here my whole life...

as for the post in regards to coconut creek very sketchy only a few nice areas gang issues there

  • I work right across the street from Nova. There are a lot of townhouses/apartments off of Nova Drive if you want to be super close to campus. The roads get pretty congested during peak hours bc there are so many campuses all in one place (FAU, Broward College, NSU, McFatter, UF Research Buildings).

Most of my coworkers live either in Davie, Pembroke Pines or Plantation. I have a few that live in Coral Springs and Coconut Creek. I would just make sure to consider the traffic on 595 bc they are doing a lot of construction right now. Also, consider whether or not you want to live somewhere that requires you to take the toll roads- turnpike and sawgrass.

ETA: Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

  • I lived in the area for about five years now, and I'm working on my Ph.D. at NSU. It's a great school, I think you'll enjoy your time here. :)

In terms of finding somewhere safe yet affordable, I would check out Davie and Plantation areas. They're quiet and residential-feeling, but you're still within minutes of things you need (grocery, gas, shopping, entertainment) and 15 min from downtown Fort Laud and the beaches. I've found everything from 1br/1bth for $900s/mo to where we're living now (2 bd/2.5 bth townhouse w/loft for $1500/mo). I definitely prefer Plantation over Davie (more of a residential feel to me), but both areas have treated us well.

If you're looking for complexes that are near main campus/HPD, PM me and I'd be happy to give you some recommendations. :)
