I have a laptop that has worked very well for me for about 5 years now. It's been on its last leg for months now so H and I are talking about getting a desktop. I haven't owned a desktop since the late 90s. I have a coworker who's willing to build me a computer online, but first give me your suggestions.
Do you have a desktop?
How long have you had it?
Who manufactured it?
Pros and cons of this particular desktop?
Re: Desktop computers
I don't have a desktop, but I will say that having one built seems to be the way to go. H is a software engineer and always builds his own so that he can get only the parts he wants, and it's easier to upgrade without having to buy a whole new system in a few years.
Sorry I have no good advice for desktops. I'm a laptop girl (Dell), mostly because it's what has worked best for me for school. I do have it set up on my desk though, with a separate, more comfortable keyboard attached underneath. I'm such a dork.
I think a more pressing question is: Mac or PC?

Haha! I'm a PC girl all the way. I always have been.
My coworker agrees with you, so I think that's the way I'll go (I can always blame him if it doesn't work out right, can't I?). We'll keep using the laptop until it completely shits the bed, but I'd like to have a backup plan in place for when that happens.
I was looking at Dells, and if it weren't for the fact that I despise them, I probably would have bought a desktop from them a while ago.
I'm a laptop user, so I can't help, but I love "completely shits the bed". I'm stealing that and using it, ok?
Also, HI BEATLES!!!!
Ha, of course! I'm sure there's a scapegoat fee built into his price of building your computer.
Just out of curiosity, what's with the Dell loathing? Did you find one in bed with your ex-boyfriend or something?

Steal away, Bec.
Beatles- It's fairly simple, really. As a birthday gift to me my dad placed an order for a laptop on their website. They charged his card the nearly $1500 for the order, but 2 weeks later the laptop still hadn't come in. He called Dell, who claimed he never placed an order. He provided them with statements proving they had taken the money out of his account and they denied it.
After a bunch of back and forth Dell finally admitted to having charged the card and offered to "re-ship" the order. A few weeks later the order didn't arrive and he went through the whole process again, this time saying he wanted his money back. It took a few more months, along with a few more faxes proving they had taken money out of his account, for them to finally refund the amount charged to his card.
My company also buys most of their computers from them and although we pay the extra service fees they fight with us any time we need service. The way I see it, if it's that big of a chore to get service for a company that's spending a hell of a lot more money with them than I ever would, how am I going to fare when I need help?
I'm guessing anyone who does check this thread and recognizes you is now going to wonder whether they are lame or not. I've missed you.

Back to the drawing board, Bec.
Kidding, I like you Linger.
<-- Pardon my excitement of more emoticon access over here. Though I am highly amused that the code for this is "pi."

I get it. You want someone to actually be available because something like that is time-sensitive. I got lucky because H can pretty much fix whatever is wrong with my computer, so I've rarely had to use tech support. Well that, and my computer actually showed up, so Dell managed to keep a customer with me.

Pretty much. I hope he knows that too!
p.s. Where's the filter that scolds me for cursing before posting? You've got some censoring going on there.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
Too late! I totally found you.
Henceforth you shall be shunned.
YOU were the one I was hiding from the hardest! Dangit. Now I have to change my locks and wear a wig and lock up my trash so you won't go through it. Why do you make me hate you?
I considered a Dell XPS or Cyberpower PC(or something along those lines). I ended up building a i7 w/ 6GB Ram for way under what I could get from dell or anywhere else. I haven't had any issues with this build, knock on wood. Win7 has been great, now that HP finally released a driver from my printer. I commented on the HP laptop thread too.
