Grand Haven area hotel recommendation for summer please

We are looking to vacation in Grand Haven this summer and spend sometime on the beaches.  Where is a good place to stay?

Re: Grand Haven area hotel recommendation for summer please

  • How long are you going to be in town for?  Do you want a hotel or cottage/house. You can check out VBRO.com for a vacation rental.

A lot of hotels are on the main business strip and not on the beach. I think there is one close to the beach. I haven't stayed any, but for my job many years ago, I had to deliver our brochures to the hotels and most of them look nice (from the lobby at least ha ha).

  • Considering the hotels that I am aware of, I'd definitely look into Bed & Breakfasts or vacation rentals first.  Otherwise, I'd probably check out the Holiday Inn just over the bridge in Spring Lake first.  There is a Best Western & Days Inn that might be okay though.  North 10 minutes or so there are some okay chain places near the Muskegon Mall.

I have always wanted to stay at http://www.harborhousegh.com/ but I think they book up pretty quickly.  We just can't justify paying to stay here when we live only 20 minutes away.

  • I second the suggestion of vrbo.com or homeaway.com for a rental house. You could also check out some B&Bs as Zebe suggested. There really aren't any chain hotels on the beach in Grand Haven.
  • I worked in Grand Haven for three years and the Harbor House Inn already mentioned is one of the most popular places to stay. It overlooks the Grand River channel, so while it's not right on the beach, you do at least have a water view. It's right in the downtown area with shops/restaurants, and the beach is a short walk or bike ride up the channel from there.

Boyden House B&B was another popular one. It's further inland, in a residential area just outside of downtown (but really we are talking a few city blocks here, this is not a big town).

The Holiday Inn in Spring Lake overlooks the Grand River and is a nice place, but you'd have to drive to the beach.

The reason you're not going to find any hotels right on the Grand Haven beach is because it's a state park. VRBO might be your best bet if you want to be RIGHT at the beach...but even there, the cottages along that sandy area are all across the street and up the hill from the actual beach. So you'll still have a little walk with your beach gear.

The Lakeshore Bed and Breakfast is in West Olive, about 20 minutes south of Grand Haven, but that one is on a private beach. Might be an option for you.
