Baby Weight Gain

I didn't realize until i got home and could look back at notes...Abe lost an oz in two weeks. Do you think it is odd he didn't gain any weight? Certainly he is healthy and he nurses fine...just not sure what to think.

Re: Baby Weight Gain

  • Did he get any longer??  He was a pretty big baby to start with, so I think that if he is nursing fine, he is probably just evening out.

  • I believe the magic number is 10% weight loss-- mommas, correct me if you've heard differently, as this is what we are told for our nursing licensing exam and the info could be 2 years old. How much does he weigh, now?

If he is getting longer or building muscle tone/losing fat, this could affect it. But again, 1 oz is not really a lot of weight-- heck, I bet he could fluctuate by close to that amount after a big poop/pee/meal!

  • I thought that at this point babies would gain .5-1# a week...

But yes, he is long. and has been playing more.

  • I'm just going by intuition, but it seems like an ounce isn't a big deal (it's the weight of a cheese cube).  I agree that a big pee or poo could totally throw the weight off, as well as how long ago he was from his last feeding, etc.  You could always go for a weight check next week just to ease your mind though.

I agree that I wouldn't worry about losing an ounce - maybe he had a big poop in him the last time he got weighed or a full belly? Those ounces a week are probably averages, so maybe he gained more one week and then less the next.  Has he doubled his birth weight at this point?   I'd just keep an eye on it, and if it seems like he continues to go down or isn't gaining, then I'd ask your pedi, but maybe this time was just a fluke.

ETA: Was he weighed on the same scale?  Maybe that's enough to make a difference too if he got weighed last time at the mother's group and this time at the pedi?

I've found that the LC scale and the pedi scale are about the same. Once he was weighed by the LC and then at the pedi three days later and had gained an ounce...which I figured was about right.

I guess I just figured that in two weeks he would have gained more like a half a pound instead of losing weight.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go to the LC and have him weighed next week.

  • Babies grow long, then gain weight, then long again. So, it could be a growth spurt in length. I know when DD was failure to thrive they were worried about weight gain. The time she did lose weight they told me not to worry until it was a closer to a pound, or I believe it was 9%, pretty close to 10 :)

Big thing is gut, if he isn't lethargic, is still a happy baby and is nursing the same I wouldn't worry. Just keep an eye on it for your own well being.

  • With a different scale I wouldn't worry (I wouldn't worry anyway since it was a small amount).  I weighed Ben a lot at first so I would notice small changes in weight, but as long as he is healthy and growing overall it's fine. Some weeks Ben gained little to no weight, some weeks he gained 12oz.  It's the overall picture that matters :)  I think 10% refers to weight lost at birth.  Ben lost more than that and they were concerned (7lbs at birth down to 6lbs 2oz at discharge), so that sticks out in my mind.

No, I wasn't saying you were a crazy...I sometimes really wonder if I am a bad mom because I rarely worry about anything.  Really, my kid had your cat's toys in her mouth and was laying in their cat beds...She was covered in fur.  Shouldn't I have been paying more attention?

This made me laugh. I think you are a fantastic mother!

  • I think we just relax about things as they get older.  Ben does the same thing with cats and toys :)
  • I totally hear you on worrying about the weight gain. Eli was in 95th percentile for height and weight for the first 6-9 months or so and then slowly dropped down to 25th in weight. I was totally freaked out but his doctor said he's healthy and just super active. I agree with getting him weighed again if it makes you feel better, but not worrying too much if everything else looks good.

I also totally agree with becoming more relaxed, but also sometimes feeling like a bad or lazy mom compared to others. One of my friends is a super-duper high strung mom (ie- when her daughter learned to walk she literally walked around everywhere right behind her so that she never, ever fell down.) So we'd have playdates and Eli would be falling all over the place, chewing on everything and she just looked at me like a slacker. Oh well! To each their own!
