Quick gardening / ground / cover question...

I had a section in the corner of my yard that never grew grass. I tried to seed it last year but it didn't work at all. This year I abandoned ship with the grass. I planted a few bushes and several grasses. I also spread some wild flower seeds in the area.

I'm thinking I really want to put some bark around the bushes to make it look more finished. Do you think that will prevent the wild flowers from seeding?

Re: Quick gardening / ground / cover question...

  • It may, depending on how deep the seeds are already planted, and how deep you want to put the mulch.  Also - make sure you don't get preen in the mulch - it'll prevent seeds from germinating.

It may be best to wait for them to grow a little and then spread it amongst them, or put a very thin layer over that area, and as deep as you like around everything else. You can always try, and if you notice they aren't coming up, you could spread some more seeds out, since they aren't too expensive!

I like mulch around and underneath shrubs. I don't like wildflowers around and underneath shrubs- I think it would look too cluttered and messy.

If it's a finished look you're after, you WANT to suppress other things from sprouting up too close to the shrubs, no?

  • I didn't throw the seeds right around the shrubs. Just in that general area. I think I'll wait to see if they pop up and if not I'll mulch.
