Is BPA everywhere?? <BPA-free canned goods>

So I was reading my first issue of Clean Eating Magazine and the recipes mentioned using non-bpa cans and listed a specific brand.

I said...wtf? My canned beans and tomatos and broth and soup all have BPA? The chemical I thought only effected plastics? <but now discover is much more broad than I thought>

I came across this website which made me sad:

While *eliminating* BPA may not be realistic without adopting a minimalist lifestyle, I am trying to green myself and thought I was doing better than I was! The more you know...the more upset you can become ;-) haha

Maybe we can try to come up with a list of brands that are BPA free? So far I have:

-Eden Foods (except their tomato products)
-Native Forest (only coconut milk, mango, papaya, fruit salad, and "most" pineapple)
-Ecofish brand tuna and Vital Choice
-Wild Planet tuna and sardines

Re: Is BPA everywhere?? <BPA-free canned goods>

  • I say you try canning.Wink

They have BPA free, reusable canning lids that I started using last year. Add that to the non-toxic glass jar and you're golden.

You can can all the stuff you mentioned you buy.

    Tomatoes (paste, diced, sauce)

    Tomato soup

    Beans

Chicken noodle soup AND chicken broth

    Pinneapple, applesauce, mandarin oranges, mangoes

    Salsas and condiments

    Pickles and relishes

Canning is fun, easy, you get to choose your produce (organic and local) and you save a ton of money. I don't even go to regular grocery store anymore. Only butcher shop once a month and then local produce place for fruits.

  • oh my goodness I'd love to start canning!

On my to-do list this year is to visit my family in PA and have a long discussion with my grandparents about canning! He has a huge vegetable garden and they can nearly everything. :-)

Also on my list is to have a garden...or porch garden! Or something <other than my herb-pot in my window>

For the moment Im in grad school and can't make a huge time commitment <boo> and don't want my plants to die out because my husband wont remember!

  • I'd like to get some glass or stainless steel sippy cups for DS. The ones he uses now are BPA free, but still make me worry.
