Help???????? Should I move to CT.

Hey all I'm looking for advice - use to be on the knot now I'm on the nest.

So I'm finally married with our two children; 7 year old girl and 13 year old boy and it's time to take the next step toward the American dream.

We currently rent a large 2 bedroom dump in a great neighborhood about 1000 sqft.  We both work in the Bronx.  I've been looking at houses in CT my first motivation is house PRICES.  I would like the best neighborhood I can afford and we dont mind getting our hands dirty.  Actually my father is a contractor in the Virgin Islands and is going to volunteer his time.

How does the cost of living compare?

I live blocks away from the "hood" but I'm looking for a better area.  How much of a better environment is it for my children?

My children are in public school now and my district is amazing... Should I be worried about the school system there?

How are your taxes?

I want to take a trip there but need to optimize my time while there....  Please suggest affordable neighborhoods, lifestyle, hidden costs we should consider, anything you think would help.

Re: Help???????? Should I move to CT.

  • How does the cost of living compare? I don't really know the COL in NY, but I think it would depend on where you lived in CT.  Fairfield County is probably on the higher end whereas the northern counties are probably not as bad.

I live blocks away from the "hood" but I'm looking for a better area.  How much of a better environment is it for my children? Again, it really depends on the town.  Some towns have excellent school systems and others are lacking and most parents enroll their kids in magnet schools.  I'd do some research online on schools in CT and see what you come up with as far as rankings.

My children are in public school now and my district is amazing... Should I be worried about the school system there? The school system in my town isn't that great, but there are plenty of magnet schools that I can get in a lottery for that are good.  Some towns have great school systems and you wouldn't need to worry.

How are your taxes? Mine are pretty high, but are not the highest in the state.  You can get a list of the millrates by town if you Google it.

I want to take a trip there but need to optimize my time while there....  Please suggest affordable neighborhoods, lifestyle, hidden costs we should consider, anything you think would help.  Would you be commuting into NY everyday or finding new jobs in CT?  I think that would play a huge factor on where you could live and if you needed to be close by car or were willing to commute by train.  I live in Hartford County and a few of my favorite towns are Plainville, Southington, Glastonbury, Windsor, Granby, E. Granby, Wallingford, Newington, West Hartford, and certain parts of Bloomfield.  I would not want to commute to work in NYC from any of these towns.  I used to date someone that lived in Fairfield back in the day and I loved the area, but it was pricey.  I don't really know much else about the Southern part of the state.

  • Thank you for your response Sugar, I guess I have lots more to research.
  • It really depends on the type of area you are looking for. I live in New Haven County, in a great neighborhood. We paid in the $250,000 range for our home. Our area is near New Haven/Stratford. The farther upstate you go is more rural. You have to do research based on your children's needs to determine what you want. But I can tell you that good towns in my area are Derby, Shelton, Orange, Milford, Beacon Falls, Trumbull. Good luck.
  • Right now we living the Bronx but are about to begin house hunting in Trumbull.  Its a little under an hour drive from where we are now (Bronx/Yonkers Border) and its about an hour to an hour and 15m train into the city.  My husband is looking to transfer jobs and once we buy a house & are settled I'll probably switch to something closer in Stanford but will deal with the train commute in the meantime.  My BIL and his family live there and are very happy with the school system.
  • I live in Naugatuck, part of the "Valley" area of towns- Ansionia, Derby, Beacon Falls. Many people- my husband included, have lived in CT all their lives and don't really know much about this area. We have lived here for three years now and I will say it is VERY affordable, especially if you don't mind doing some work- our friends just bought a nice cape for around $145K. I don't have kids, but I honestly believe that most CT schools are a step up from many other areas of the country. My family is from Long Island and I have lived in FL, Ohio, and upstate NY, and CT is my FAVORITE! Its beautiful and still accessable to many places.
