We have a very small back yard, maybe 12X16 feet would be my estimate. We have a small brick patio and on each side of the patio is a little 3X6 foot dirt section. It is a very shaded area, but one of the sides does very well with hosta, impatients, and other shade plants and grasses. The other side does not. One of our neighbors said the previous owner had a female dog that used that side as her bathroom all the time and every time we plant something there it browns and dies within weeks. We are trying to think of an alternative to using traditional plants, the only thing I can think of is a rock garden, but that idea doesn't really appeal to me.
Any other ideas?
Re: Alternative to a traditional garden?
Expand the patio or amend the soil?
The dog usage doesn't really matter unless the dog had some serious health issues. Try ammending the soil with steer manure and then waiting a few weeks before planting. Make sure to water the soil about every other day. It will help to nutralize the soil. Steer manure can fix anything. It's unbelievably the best gardening tool there is. I have fixed all sorts of soil problems with it.
GET A SOIL TEST before you add any amendments, even organic ones. Find out what is wrong before attempting to cure it.
