DH and I went to a family bbq a couple days ago. I have family in from out of state so we all gathered at my grandparent's house. One of my family members has a 14 month old boy who is super cute, but I observed something that seemed a little strange to me. No matter who picked him up, he would smack them across the face! It happened to me, my Mom, my grandma and to the LO's Mom and Dad. They weren't like playful swats either, they were full on I'm trying to hurt you smacks! I have not been around young, young children for quite some time, but it just seemed off to me. I know he wanted to walk around and explore, but in my 24 years I have never seen a child smack people before! Tell me I'm crazy for not knowing this is normal behavior, or that I'm justified in feeling it was weird.
Re: Question for all of the Moms..
it's definitely a stage around that age.
They know what they want but can't express it.
That being said and I may get flamed for this but Lucy knows she isn't allowed to hit and if she does she gets a hand swat and gets put down, then she has to say sorry.
Her hitting has almost stopped because of this. We also tell her to say "all done" if she doesn't want to be held/touched instead of hitting.
It is all too common around this age but many parents just let it happen. I don't think that is ok.
this happened to us with our first. my idiot SIL TAUGHT him to do this and would laugh every time he would hit so he thought he was just having fun and being funny when he would hit. she was out of town for 3 months and we really worked with him and taught better. i also told my mom to pass along the message to her that i better not see this happen again or she won't be seeing my kids much longer.
it DOES get better though with discipline.
