The hubby and I are camping on Lake Red Rock this weekend and we want to have lunch in Pella and pick up some great dutch pastries. We've never been to Pella before (sad, I know.) so we have no idea where to get the best stuff. What do you suggest?!

  • **butting in**  Jaarsma bakery is yummy!  My family stops at the one in Oskaloosa, but it is all baked at the one in Pella.  We love their coffee cakes, the apple bread (apples, nuts, glaze - yummy), and cake donuts (not exactly Dutch).  MrsReem will have to give you the rundown on what is truly Dutch.

When does the tulip festival start?

  • Fun!

I was going to suggest Smokey Row for lunch. We have one here in Des Moines too now though. You can get great fresh meat sandwiches at Ulrich's meat market but I'm not sure if you're big meat eaters. Otherwise there's the Windmill Cafe right on the town square as well but I'd say the food is just good. Not amazing or anything. Obviously there are plenty of commercial fast food places and pizza as well.

I agree that I like Jaarsema's bakery over Vander Ploeg's Bakery but you can't go wrong either way. Dutch letters are the big hit with everyone. DH likes the Goat Legs (Lamb's legs? pastry dipped in chocolate) I like the puff pillows and the frosted sugar cookies. (I'm not a big pastries girl. Growing up there kind of did me in on that stuff.) The flavored donut holes are good although not Dutch per se. Buttermilk and cherry are awesome.  The Dutch Apple bread is good. If you like more of a spice cookie, try a Sinterklaas cookie. Kind of like gingerbread but better.

  • Definitely stop at jaarsema's for a Dutch letter! They're awesome! I went to central for 2 years and would volunteer at the bakery during tulip time for the free goodies! (well, and I was awesome and in the bio/chem club that volunteered there! Lol!)
