When should I plant bulbs in NJ?

Any nesties around me know about when I should put them in the ground?  I just bought a house and am brand new to gardening.  Thanks!

Re: When should I plant bulbs in NJ?

  • Fall. Probably around October- if you check out the bulb package, it tells you the customary planting time for your area. This might vary for different bulbs.

  • Tulips, Daffodils, Ranunculus and such go in during the Fall.  But there are some summer flowering bulbss/roots that go in now such as Dahlias.  Normally garden centers are carrying the bulbs during the season they should be planted.  So if you don't see what you want now at stores it will be there in the Fall.

  • When I receive already blooming plants in the spring from friends.  I plant them so the bulb is three times the depth as the size of the bulb and they will come up again next spring.  Dormant spring blooming bulbs are planted in the fall.
