Knockout Rose Bush Question....

So I purchased 3 rose bushes last year, one was a "hot pink" and the other two were "yellow".  Well I placed the 2 yellow rose bushes in the yard and they are not near as bushy and full as the hot pink one is.... Also, my hot pink one already has buds on it again and looks awesome.  The other two are living but not near as pretty or full as the hot pink one.  I am thinking about pulling up the two yellow ones and putting them in a pots and taking them out of the hot summer sun.  I have a place where I can put them where they will get indirect sunlight.  I dont know, is there a difference between them that would make them grow diffrently?  I would understand if one of the yellow rose bushes was looking alot better than the other, but my only thoughts, were to just dig them up and take them out of the dead hot sun...

Thoughts or any knowledge is appreciated...

Re: Knockout Rose Bush Question....

  • Knockout roses bushes are supposed to be fool proof.  They like full sun and I have seen many in complete all day sun that do great.  The only ideas I can come up with is maybe there is a difference with the yellow variety or your soil needs some amending.  I would also prune it to help.  I know that might seem counterproductive but pruning out too low branches, branches that are crossing, or just pruning a bit for shaping reasons all help to keep the plant healthy and stimulate growth.

  • I'm not trying to be a jerk, but are you sure they are really Knock Out roses. Knock Outs are patented. Do you yellows look like these?

  • are you sure they are getting equal sun? My house sits in such a way that the side to the left of my front path gets a lot more sun 10 hours vs. the right side 7 hours. The knock out rose on the left is bigger

  • I don't think I would move them out of the sun. I had knockouts in my back yard where they got tons of sun and the front yard where they didn't get as much. The ones that got more sun did much better. I ended up moving the ones in the front to an area with more sun. The bright pink/red ones were the originals. The yellow came later. Maybe they don't do quite as well?

  • Yes they look exactly like that!
  • Maybe I will just leave them be for this year and see what happens... I bought some Knock Out Rose bush food, so I will just use that and see what happens... It just doesnt look near as good as my pink ones do and they are in less sun than my yellow ones...
  • I bought 3 knock out roses last year (I think it was last year) - a lighter pink, a darker pink, and a yellow.  They were all approximately the same size when I planted them - but my pink ones are now twice as big, and already have lots of leaves coming out.  The yellow is just behind for some reason.  It's not a matter of space/layout, either - the yellow is in between the other two in a line!  I have noticed my yellow one is the only one that smells like a rose, the pink ones have no scent - which is odd.  But - I def. know what you are talking about!

  • Thanks ASCHLESER, I seriously just thought it was me!!!!  I guess I won't "yank" it up and I will leave it be!  And your right the yellow ones smell wonderful, but my hot pink ones really don't have a smell!
  • The Sunnies (yellow) only get 2-3 feet, where the original pinks and reds can get up to five feet tall.

The whites only get to be two feet.

We sell a large amount of Bayer 3 in 1 for Roses.  It fertilizes, gets rid of bugs, and diseases.  I use it three times a year and my KOs look great.

There's nothing "wrong", they don't need fertilizer or pruning. Yellow roses are always the last to bud out in the spring. They're nowhere near as vigorous as reds and pinks.
