Missing Mirena!!

I went in a wieek ago to check up on my IUD (Mirena) and they couldn't locatevthe strings. I went in for an ultrasound and my IUD was nowhere to be found! I either passed it (ouch) or it has traveled somewhere else! I am going in for a ct scan next week so wish me luck! Has anyone had this happen?

Also, I am not sure if I can go through the procedure again. It was pretty painful for me and there was no numbing  involved. My sister had the procedure done and was given a shot and said it wasn't that bad.

I think that when I go back to get MIrena again, I will find an office that does the numbing shot!

Re: Missing Mirena!!

  • Umm, mine went missing 2 weeks after it was placed and my doc couldn't find it so I had a ultrasound to try and locate it and nothing. She said the same thing to me, either I passed it or it traveled into into my abdomen. Sure enough after my ctscan they said it had made a hole in my cervix and traveled into my abdomen. I had to have surgery to take it out... I never got it replaced in fear that it would happen again...I hope you passed it...
  • Did you have any unusual pain with that?

  • It should show up with an abdominal XRay. If I was paying for the CT, I'd ask for an Xray first. The Xray is much cheaper.

  • Oh no!  I don't have any advice, but this was one of my biggest fears.  Especially since I had to put off my follow-up appointment 2 times due to family emergencies.  Thankfully she found my strings no problem.  Good luck!

  • My fears were answered!

They found the Mirena in my left pelvis cavity just chillin'. I went in for surgery yesterday bright and early.

Because they determined that when it was first put in by a nurse midwife, she inserted ( stabbed me) right through the uterus and the IUD was never in place. I did miss my follow-up appt but luckily I had a feeling something wasn't right!

Call me crazy, but I had them insert another one while I was under anesthesia! I experienced heavy heavy bleeding all yesterday and after a midnight trip to the ER across town, the doctor determined that when they clamped my cervix to insert the new one, there was a tear that they had to fix. After all of that, and a ridiculously long day and night with no sleep, I am finally feeling confident about everything!

  • I hope that wasn't too much info! Just so you know the chances of what happened to me are 1 in 10,000...and most of the issues are insertion problems!

  • Wow! I would not want to get another after that experience. I had mine in for 5 years...wont do it again though.
