I'm hoping to paint waves on the wall of the baby's room, and I have a design to do so, but I'm stuck on what to use to make the stencil itself out of... what material could I use to do this?
I think I saw special stencil making material online, but I'd rather make one at home and save the hassle and wait and money to buy one.
Re: homemade stencils?
My concern with plain cardboard is that the paint might soak into it and make a mess when I'm moving from one "wave" to the next... but, if I can make a long enough piece, that just might do the trick...

With cardboard I would worry about the paint bleeding and also the cardboard warping when wet -- the key to using a stencil properly is that is must be perfectly flat on the surface to be painted.
I'm trying to think of some other lightweight plastic material like stencil film but my mind is blank.
I'm not sure if you can buy just a few sheets of this or if it is even easy to find these days, but maybe the plastic sheets we used to use to write on projectors. I remember getting some of that when I was in college. It's pretty sturdy, would wipe clean and would be easy to cut. Oh and from a search on amazon, the technical term is transparencies. It's been a while
