So i want to dye my hair

And not just like add highlights or something...like complete dye job.

I'm sick of looking mousey with my half dirty-blond, half light brown hair with growing out highlights that i dont care enough to maintain. And i dont have enough time in the summer to sit outside and get my nice pretty natural blond hair to come out.

So...i'm thinking a medium to dark brown. I know, its drastic. Do you think this would look good/weird? I have blue eyes and fair skin with cool undertones (except when i drink wine...then im beet red haha).

Should i go for it? Or should i try a semi-permanent color first? I've only ever completely dyed my hair once and it was pretty close to my natural color, just a little more reddish.

Also, if i do, do I dye my eyebrows (they are pretty light blond) or do i just pencil them darker every day?

Re: So i want to dye my hair

  • Do it! I think it would look fine. Just play around with the eyebrows, no big deal.

I usually just leave my eyebrows the way they are, but that's just me

DH's sister is coming out tomorrow and I'm going to with red and blonde highlights. I loved having red hair, but don't want to go all the way again.

  • I say go for it!  I used semi-permanent for years- and loved it (back when I had less than half white hair).  I would do that first, just so you can make sure you like the change and then aren't stuck having to get it corrected at a salon if you don't.    If you are going to go to a salon, I love the hair dye they use at Aveda Salons.   If you are near an Aveda Institute and have a few hours to kill, even better (and cheaper!)

Not sure what to do about the eyebrows...

  • My natural hair color sounds similar to yours.  I had blonde hair growing up and it got a little darker as I got older but I hated it after awhile.  I am so much happier with my darker hair!

I say go for it!  But, if you feel more comfortable try a semi-permanent first.  My hair stylist told me not to dye my eyebrows with the at-home dye (if that's the route you're going) but I do it anyway, putting it on lightly and when there are only five minutes left.

If you do decide to change your haircolor, keep us updated with a pic!

  • Ooooh do it!!!  My hair is a mousey brown color, and I've been dyeing mine for the past 4 years and love it.  It's fun to change up your look :)  I have fair skin with olive undertones, and I think I look best with medium-dark brown, so I think that you could pull it off too.  It's hard for me to visualize, but if you're nervous, try the semi-permanent first.  It won't fade out completely back to your normal color, just so you know.  A demi-permanent MIGHT, but I've never tried one of those, so I can't say for sure.  A semi-permanent will just fade lighter.  And it will always look darker the first few days.

They tell you not to dye your eyebrows, but I have in the past.  Just keep your eyes closed in the shower while you're rinsing.  Or you can use a pencil.  I do that now, and I find it helps give them a better shape.

  • Go for it!!! I'd say go with semi-permanent at first, just to make sure you like it, then if you do you can switch over. I envision like a auburn color for you...darker brown with some redish undertones. I've never done my own color before so I can't say about the eyebrows (I've only ever done highlights but they basically turned into all over color). I'd be wary of dying my own eyebrows. Personally I'd just pencil them in a little darker.

Definitely post pictures after you do it!!!

  • If you want the brown with reddish undertones like Lauren suggested... I use Excellence Cream by L'oreal... and a couple of their strict brown colors DO have reddish undertones.  Both "medium chocolate brown" and "dark chocolate brown"  come out with lots of reds on my hair (but my hair is also 75-90% white, has been since I was about 27).

  • thanks ladies :) i think ill try the semi permanent first so if its too dark it will lighten up for me.

    im excited!

though i have no idea what time ill have to actually do this within the next few weeks lol, but when i do, ill definitely take pictures for you all!!!

  • I am a natural blonde, and went very dark brown a few times.

I have fair skin and blue eyes, and always get tons of compliments when I die it dark.

I would suggest dieing your eyebrows also if you have light ones, it will look more natural and way less of a pain in the ass.
