When are you too old to wear short sundresses?

I've started to wonder if I'm too old for them now that I'm in my early (and soon to be mid) thirties. I'm looking at this dress and wondering if I could still wear it for the next few years? WDYT?

Re: When are you too old to wear short sundresses?

  • My perception (being essentially mid-30's) is that I could wear the top of that dress, or the bottom, but not both because too much skin is showing.

Here's the back view. I don't think it's very short. It's more the top I'm wondering about. Now that I'm thinking about it I wonder if my strapless bra would even work with it anyway. Mmm...

  • Oh please, age has NOTHING to do with it! If it looks good on you, you can wear it. If not, don't!

Well I generally think that, too, but I do think it can look silly when you don't dress age appropriately.
  • I think it's more about what you're comfortable in and what looks good on you. I'm 27 but it's not a dress I could pull off or would feel comfortable in. It's not all about age.
  • I'm 28 and I'd wear it but not without a cardigan or something over it.  I would feel like too much skin is showing. I, too, don't think it's about age, but what you feel comfortable in.

  • I agree ! I'm short and so nothing really shows my buttocks too much, and my legs are one of the things I'm comfortable showing, so I don't see myself giving up on Mini skirts or dresses anytime soon, and certainly not at a arbitrary " age".

If I was anywhere but hanging out casually, I would probably wear cardigan or some kind of wrap, too.

I'm 32 (almost 33!) and my summer staple is mini skirts and tank tops and sun dresses. Not quite as low-cut as that, but I would wear it.

disclaimer: I come from a place where 100+ degrees for weeks solid is the norm in the summer, and when it's 104 outside for the 4th straight day, you get as close to naked as you're comfortable getting, regardless of age.

  • I'd probably wear it, but that dress is going to go at least to my knees, since I am pretty short.

  • I tend to think that unless you have a ROCKIN' body, and no cellulite issues, that short dresses like that go out with your 20s. But what do I know? If you look good and feel confident, go nuts.

I doubt it would show any cellulite unless you were really tall. It's only a few inches above the knee on the model. Jiggly action however... I agree Emily that when it really hot (which is sometimes here in the summer) sun dresses are a great option. Certainly better than Daisy Dukes... But I have decided the top of this dress is too low cut. I'd probably have to go braless and I can't do that anymore.

I think I found a better option since finding that that I wouldn't have any qualms about wearing. It was the coral color I was looking for. I've been wanting a dress this color for awhile.

Cute dress. Almost looks like the BM dresses that my girls wore except theirs was tea length. Same color too.

  • That is cute, Mary. But I wonder how you would keep your bra from showing looking at the close up of the bust area.

I think if you just wear a nude one it wouldn't be an issue.

That would mean buying one. My strapless bra is white which is really closer to my skin tone than "nude" anyway so it might work. Mmm...

Oh...yeah I guess if you didn't have one then it's kind of a bummer.  I think it's super cute though...I want one now! Too bad it's rainy and cold outside still!

You might be able to sew a little modesty piece of nude fabric into it if you were that worried about it.  That wouldn't cost as much as a bra...assuming you can sew.

We are a bad influence on each other. I started looking for this because of your dress hunting post! LOL

LOL...I know...I sooo want that dress.  I ended up finding something different on ebay for $40...it's short though.  Not sure if I'm going to wear it to the dinner or not.  I finally got clarification and they said cocktail or evening dress, so it might be OK.

  • Ah, well at least you have more options. I'm sure whatever you choose will look great.
  • I think as long as your skin looks good you could get away with anything.

This is the only reason I don't wear some super skin-baring stuff. When you're this white, it just looks so much more suggestive than people with tans! And ditto what EmmieB said about 100+ degree heat (which you, h, obviously know about).

I don't think L meant white I think she meant wrinkled. I consider myself to still have nice skin (due in large part to staying out the sun, esp w/o sunscreen). I'm not ashamed to be fair-skinned and I don't think you should be either, B. You have nice skin.

You are correct in your assumption H. I meant wrinkled, vericose (sp?) veined, faux orange tanned, etc. My attitude is, no one wants to see orange wrinkly cleavaged women trying desperately to be young. But regardless of your age, if you look and feel good, you should be allowed to flaunt it.

  • I think you can wear a sun dress at any age...but the style has to change with age.  I think even short sundresses are okay for older gals....as long as they aren't too short.

That dress however seems made for someone really young, like a late teen super early 20s at most.

That's kind of what I was wondering. I think I would only wear it as like a swimsuit cover-up (which isn't really what it's for I'm thinking). I'm thinking the other dress I posted is a much better option for me.

Yeah I agree, the second one is much better.

The irony is that I would never have worn that in my late teens and would never have been able to pull it off/fill it out. Now I could.
