Planting near an arborvitae

Hi all, I live in a townhouse with a medium-sized planting bed out front.  It has one arborvitae to the side with about 5 ft of planting space in front of it.  I'm wary of the shade it and the neighbor's tree casts--the planting space would get about 4 hours of sunlight a day, mostly in the late morning-midday.  Because of that, I've tried to plant things that would tolerate some shade--bleeding hearts, columbine, azaleas.  Nothing comes back the next year.  Other plants that may receive similar light but aren't near the arborvitae do just fine.

Am I missing something peculiar about planting near an arborvitae?  Too much competition?  Soil pH? I can supplement with a ton of compost this year if someone has ideas on what plants would have a fighting chance in this space.

TIA!
