Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting here. I'm graduating college in May, and I will be moving to Baton Rouge in June to start my new job in July! I'll be moving with my girlfriend who is a kindergarden teacher currently. The place I am working at is actually located in Geismar, but I figured we could probably live in the southeast part of Baton Rouge. I've been doing some research, and found that there are some nice areas to live there. We are looking into renting a house for now, so I wanted to come on here and ask for your opinions of the area. Where are the best places to live? What are the best elementary schools to work at? Anything else in general would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Moving to Baton Rouge!
I could probably answer most any questions you have, I am a Mommy, Realtor, and 25 so I could probably give you realistic advice you might be looking for on pretty much everything Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. Feel free to e-mail me BrittNoel86@gmail.com. Hope this helps.

Hey random person. Don't come on here and solicit people, if you want to be an active part of our community that's one thing and welcome, this is not.
Thanks for being so helpful! I've only driven through Baton Rouge once, and we stopped at the Mall of Louisiana. That area looked very nice from what I remember. The reason we are looking to live closer to a big city is that is what we are used to. We have lived in Houston and Austin, so moving to town like Geismar could be a pretty big culture shock in which I'm not sure we're ready for. I think a commute of roughly 30 minutes would be okay, and thats what it looks like it would be living in SE BR. My girlfriend is a kindergarden teacher, and I know there are more job opportunites for an elementary teacher in a city with over 50 elementary schools than a town with maybe 1 or 2. We are both still in our early 20's, so being close to an active community would be nice. We don't want to live too close to the LSU campus though. Again, thanks for all the help!
Hey lady glad you decided to join the nest!! the ladies are great here and really helpful but we cant solicit business. call me or text me if you have questions.. but glad you joined we just cant solicit
Thanks for the advice. Becides Ascension Parish School District, where else should see apply? What about West Baton Rouge or Livingston, or City of Baker? Are those the ones you are talking about?
I suggest Livingston Parish, Ascension Parish, Assumption Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish.
as far as EBR, Woodlawn Elementary, Shenandoah Elementary and Parkview Elementary are in my opinion the best ones and in good areas of BR. my kid goes to Woodlawn Elementary which is an amazing school, not to mention brand new. which makes me defend EBR because when people say it sucks, which it does, i am like, but we have an amazing school. so amazing that i stood in line over night in the freezing cold with 30 other parents to get a spot for my DD in pre-k for the fall.(pre k is not mandatory and is a first come first serve basis)
West BR couls be ok, like in Brusly at Lukeville Elementary, Cohn Elementary and Port Allen Elementary might be ok, but not totally sure. i have a frined at Cohn.
Zachary schools are great too, but not even close to Geismar/st. gabriel area.

Moving from Houston or Austin to Geismar will be a huge culture shock; I do not recommend this. Most people commute in the opposite direction so if you live in the city, the commute really won't be that bad. Where in the city really depends on what you're looking for. Do you want a neighborhood with families? Or a place that has more of a nightlife/no kids vibe (not LSU)? Or are you more into the arts scene?
In answer to your earlier question, Capital Heights is kind of just a neighborhood. I'm not even sure if the actual street is out there. Look at places located in Mid-City (although that might be a bit too far).
Outside of EBR, I'd look for teaching jobs in Ascension, Livingston, Central, Zachary & West Baton Rouge. Where you guys find jobs will definitely be a deciding factor in where you live.
Welcome! We're flipping awesome.
I actually live in the Old Jefferson area close to P'ville. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods out here. And it's definitely a good compromise in that it's close to the city but not too bad of a commute. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about anything.
