XP: coconut oil for skin?

After entirely too much agonizing, I've decided to try coconut oil as my go-to general skin treatment for baby, and for me. Does anyone here use it?

I figured it was worth a shot, as it's cloth diaper safe, nursing safe, easy to get, and reasonably cheap (at least in comparison to similar natural skin products). And if all else fails, I can eat a lot of coconut rice.

Re: XP: coconut oil for skin?

  • I've used it on myself, but I mostly use it on my dog.  He's got a lot of allergies and his skin flakes.  It smells good and I don't worry about him ingesting a little bit of it.

  • I've been using it and love that it is natural, chemical free, etc.

  • I just started using it.  A coworker recommended it and swears by it.  Haven't tried it on the dog yet...although she's very interested in it when I apply it.

  • what all can it be used for?

According to what I've read, kind of everything. It's supposed to be good for eczema, acne, yeast rash, moisturizing, and has an SPF of somewhere around 4-6.

  • I love it and use it on my skin in the summer. (I use medicated lotion in the winter. Probably will be using the oil solely soon.) It makes my skin feel sooooo good - no one would buy commercial lotions anymore if they knew how great coconut oil is.
  • I use it as a moisturizer and makeup remover (it does a great job on waterproof mascara).
  • I've been using it for over a year as a makeup remover and it works great. I also use it on one of my dogs if he gets a skin irritation.

  • If it's for eczema/dermatitis my son has both.  We switched laundry detergent and soap to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS ) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) free soaps/detergents.

Not sure if we can solicit here so if you're interested email me: sgovernali@comcast.net

Most items contain coconut oil! Smile

  • I use it as my moisturizer after showering and on my son's cheeks when they are chapped from his drool! I also used it to help combat cradle cap with him. Any other dry spots get the coconut oil! I like using it for stuff on his face/arms, so if he sucks or licks it off it won't hurt him.

  • My sisters youngest son used to get a lot of yeast infections (he just did'nt do well with cloth diapering), so she used to make a container of organic virgin coconut oil mixed with minced fresh garlic.  Did the trick.

I have what I think is a yeast rash on my finger that I've been trying to kill for months now... this may be the next attempt.

  • Ouch, I guess Nutiva's prices have gone up.  Last year I bought a one gallon bucket with a coupon and free shipping, and I think it came to about $30.00.
